Substituted azides are 1,3-dipolars and readily undergo cycloadditions with alkenes and, more commonly, alkynes. Azides and alkynes form 1,2,3-triazoles. Triazoles are particularly stable because they are aromatic structures. The reaction of azides and alkynes has become particularly common since around 2000 and has been adopted by many in biochemical fields as a relatively simple method for covalently linking biological molecules.
