The best female dancer in movie history. She could do ANYTHING.

No. She could not tap dance. What she did, she did it wonderfully, second to none, don´t get me wrong, but she was not the most complete or versatile dancer of the Golden Age of Hollywood musicals (Vera Ellen, IMHO)

I remember when Janet Jackson paid tribute to Miss Charisse by putting her in her video where she plays the rich woman strutting out of a store and Janet dances along side her before each wave to the other goodbye. Miss Charisse was in her 60's and retired at that time, but she still had those extraordinary legs and was class personified.

Cyd was in top form in Janet’s “Alright” video. Cyd does a kick ( just one ) in the video and it’s alright a complete 90 degree angle. 📐 Cyd was on another level 😮

This production number of Mr Cole Porter's The Red Blues in 1957 MGM's Silk Stockings was brilliantly choreographed by Mr Hermes Pan and Mr Eugene Loring and was splendidly performed by Ms CYD CHARISSE and the chorus dancers.It's a mixture of various dance styles - modern ballet,swing jazz,boogie,and a bit of rock n' roll.Her agility,vivacity,and ability in dancing were truly crystalline,fluid,and astonishing.She was / will always be one of the most excellent and exquisite dancers of all time.

Hermes Pan worked on the numbers in which Fred Astaire appeared, all the rest were Eugene Loring - this is his work. Brilliant choreographers indeed.

@@all-world-all-time Loring had done the (over)long dream ballet and the brilliantly desynchronized duet 'Coffee Time' in 'Yolanda and the Thief'. But 12 years later he refused to work with Fred, saying that 'Old Dad', as Astaire called himself, had become too set in his ways and would no longer attempt ambitious ballet-derived concepts. True or not (and Fred had always blamed 'Yolanda's massive flop for being too arty) 'Silk Stockings' was Astaire's farewell to musicals. Nobody would say it was his best or most inventive film, though 'The Ritz Roll 'n' Rock' is a great one to go out on.

Ms. Charisse- yikes!! She does not show an inch of skin, yet she makes this clever mesh of Hopak and break dancing completely sexy. The pirouettes towards the camera @ 4:15 show off the talent of a real, trained ballerina. Everything about Cyd was amazonian- this number further proves such. "Beautiful dynamite" indeed.
@dis7817

Not only does she not show skin, she does not need to " hip thrust' in order to be sexy, something the "younger generation" needs to learn about what is truly sexy, rather than vulgar. And she was not "break dancing" as this type of dancing was not "invented yet".

Since the USA and Russia were enemies in the '50s, this dance number satirizes life in the USSR - different people have to live in curtained enclosures in one large room, and American-style music and dancing have to be kept secret.

This scene came out in 1957, the year that Joseph McCarthy died. McCarthyism, at this time, was on the way out or it couldn’t have been included the movie. (Silk Stockings - 1957). This was a way for Hollywood to thumb its nose at Joseph McCarthy.

Along with most of these innane comments, this is considered modern dance. Born in the USA. But sold as an export. 100 univ. offer Masters degrees in ballet in the USA but only 1 offers a Masters in Modern. Sold to the highest bidder, China wins and the USA teaches Ballet to it's youth and few notice and few care as long as capitalism reighns and the gas tank is full.
