I think the name canaliculatum refers to the shape of the leaves. The species Dendrobium canaliculatum also has channeled leaves.

I just received "maddidum x canaliculatum var. sparksei", little black sambo. I've never owned a cymbidium before and after doing some research and watching this video, im wondering if you could advise as to what to pot it in for window sill growing? It just came bare root, lightly wrapped in moss

I potted mine in large bark and your hybrid should be fine in the same. Good luck with it! It will also need a long dry spell over winter I imagine!

I've overwintered my C. canaliculatum var. sparkesii here in Melbourne outdoors, undercover, in full sun with minimal problems. I kept it bone dry from Anzac Day (25th of April) till approx. Remembrance Day (11th of November). I did give it a few light sprays of water on warm sunny days near the end, as the bulbs were quite wrinkled. Another grower I discussed this with also keeps to this dry period regime. It seems they need it I did loose a few young bulbs at the start of autumn, but I think that was transplant shock as I received it bare rooted. But it bounced back and the 6 remaining bulbs have given me 4 flower-spikes, that are just about finishing now. During the flowering 4 new shoots have come up as well. I expect yours will probably start pushing shoots out soon. Yours looks healthy! Best of luck!

I am thinking the terracotta pot will be a wrong move for that species. In the wild they grow in a hollow tree trunk and the roots can grow all the way down the inside of the trunk and into the ground.. the rotting wood in the hollow actually stays moist even though it might not get rain in the dry months. I think the terracotta pot will dry out way too much. If you must do terracotta, maybe double pot. Good luck.

I'm considering potting mine up in a hollow log. It will keep the soil moisture and temperature more stable, and possibly a better microbiome and higher pH for the roots as well.

I agree with this suggestion. I lived in tropical North Queensland for a long time, and they often grow in tree branch hollows. With the roots down the hollow branch is a sort of leaf mould type material which I always presumed was the inner tree wood rotted down. Being well protected by the outer wood of the branch, the roots don't get as dry as those dendrobium orchids growing on the outside. They die quickly if their roots remain very wet for too long.

COSV has a page by Roger Herraman on C. canaliculatum that backs up most of the growing conditions discussed here. (Sorry, can't post links here, Google it) Interestingly, that article also seems to suggest that C. canaliculatum's distribution is as far South as Ardlethan in inland southern NSW! I haven't seen that verified yet by iNaturalist or anyone else..

Hi Matthew Congratulations for your videos. I live in Italy in Florence and I think the climate is similar to that of Melbourne. I grow a Cymbidium madidum and I would like to try the canalicultum, But when does it have to stay in the northern hemisphere without being wet? Thanks for your answer

Stop watering at the equinox before winter, start watering at the equinox before Summer. Matthew suggested holding off watering for even longer. If you are in the northern hemisphere, that would be Stop at September, start at March-May

Hi again Matthew, could I change the subject for a minute and ask about kingianums? I can't see the answer in your videos. You say they need a winter chill and plenty of winter sun so I have mine in a cold greenhouse which has been down usually between 5-10C. I only water about once every 10 days. A couple of canes are showing the beginnings of spikes, can I bring them in the house now before the ice and snow comes in the UK or should I leave them out and use the heater on frosty nights until they all show flower spikes? Happy New Year and I hope the move goes well 😊❤

Hi there, I'm not sure! I think you might have to experiment and see what works. They are obviously happy at the moment so I'd be inclined to leave them as long as the green house doesn't get to freezing point? But....I don't grow mine in your conditions so I really couldn't say! Either way good luck and let us know how they go!

you have to be careful what you read online mathew. Like the maxillaria tenuifolia "needs" a dry winter rest or it won't flower but the truth is it doesn't need it and will flower just fine if you carry on watering it too. Many times the things I hear others say makes me even think someone must have invested these myths at some point to purposefully make growers fail. Your tip of not watering this orchid for 8 months. Yeah, you have made me really tempted to buy this orchid just to water it all year long and prove I can flower it doing that lol. But i don't think I will do that. I would do it if you paid for one just to prove to you that most online advice is a guideline that does not always need to be followed... This pretty much applies to any guide I have come across. Once one realizes one guide has flaws, one realizes they all tend to have the same flaws. Watch a youtuber called orchid doc: growing orchids in jamaica. See how people in jamaica grow these orchids you say need a cool dry rest. Just for comparrisons sake and to show you how it's done when an orchid doesn''t get the cool rest that all the guides say they need.

This was advice from the grower in Melbourne who does very well with them! I won't abstain for a full 8 months, it really depends upon my weather, if its warm with mild nights it will be fine with a little water over autumn/winter. True you have to find your own way with any plant which is the whole point of my channel really; the care advice from people I've met growing in my conditions have been very useful!

@@bbost3 sorry to hear. Figuring out orchids is not always straightforward. I have kept mine watered all winter not going below 12 degrees C and it has never killed them. I once whistled next to one of mine and it died. Now ask yourself from my point of view analyzing your response, should I be warning others to not make my mistake with their orchids? Sure I could.

I came back to admire it again and thought I'd let you know how I grow my canaliculatum hybrid in Cape Town. Might be better to listen to those who grow your specific plant... Anyway, indoors in winter, direct sun for a few hours, allowed to dry out well between waterings, still watered lightly. Outdoors in summer under the shelter of a large shrub, water pretty much daily. And it tolerates impressively strong sun. In the spring it was quite happy with full midday sun, now it gets quite a bit of direct afternoon sun between gaps in foliage, probably similar to the coverage provided by a eucalyptus. I use a little controlled release fertiliser and top up with tonics as well as Nitrosol now and then. Temp low around 10 degrees C, haven't tried cooler. Bet it would be fine though. I'm also a terracotta lover. It's in a tall 'rose pot' with coconut chips and a little styrofoam. It dries out quickly, which is great for me. I've had it for eight months, it's happy and healthy. I expect flowers but we'll see. @@helloplantlovers
