Hi guys. Here a translation for the non-french people. Tell me if there are some mistakes, I'm not an english native. Thank you. I intentionaly remove the "n'est-ce pas ?" which mean "isn't it ?" because he says it too much. I put between parentheses the verbs/words I was not sure. 00:00:48 Thank you. I want you to keep in mind some things. Schumann said that so much boldness, tenderness, love and contempt overflowed of this Scherzo that we could compare it to a poem of Lord Byron. 00:01:07 There is a very very important thing. Chopin himself said that the beginning was "key" of the entire piece. And this beginning, he made it work a lot (by his pupils) because he was never satisfied. And I think every pianists got problem with this beginning. These little notes, these triplets, which have to be... a questioning, isn't it ? It has to be a questioning. Chopin said it has to sound like a "house of the dead". He even said that the second triplet has to be (dropped/fallen). 00:01:45 It means : the 1st triplet ... You mustn't play it fast, otherwise you will (swallow/get) it (/down). We have to hear them (the notes) distinctly and every eighth notes must have a particular significance. 00:02:00 Well... Try to imagine someone who just died, because Chopin said it has to sound like a "house of the dead". The body is dead, and all of a sudden, the soul reaches the beyond, another world, in the realm of the dead. He wonders: "Why am I here ?" (Katsaris plays the 1st triplet) The second is more (dropped/fallen). It is more different. How to explain ? It is more laid. More interrogator. And there is a reply. A strong reply (me: Katsaris says "a blinding reply", but it sounds weird in english). Imagin the trumpet of a guardian of the realm of the dead, who says "YOU ARE IN THE REALM OF THE DEAD!"(Katsaris plays) 00:02:50 And the dead wonders "What am I doing here? I'm dead ? It's not possible." (Katsaris plays). The 2nd triplets of the 2nd part are indicated pianissimo by Chopin. The 1st are sotto voce, and the 2nd are pianissimo. 00:03:14 And then, the dead wonders "May I escape ?" (Katsaris plays) And the guardian reply "NO NO NO NO NO NO !" and he catches him. He tells him "no, you can't escape ! You are dead, you are us now." And every "NO !", And when you reach there, 1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2(he insists on this "2") 3 ! The G-flat are on the 2nd beat. I have to hear, even you don't play it, I have to hear the 1st silencious beat. We have "1 2 3, 1 2 3, 1 2! 3. He try to catch him. You can't escape. 00:03:56 We can compare it to the beginning of the 5th Beethoven symphony. (Katsaris plays). We don't hear the 1st eighth note, but you have to feel it. So, I want to feel here the... (Katsaris plays). So please, play it again, a way more interrogator, and every eighth notes have its importance. 00:04:21 (The girl plays) Not so fast. The 2nd triplet a little more slowly. Not that slowly, between the 2 please. Less strong. And don't maintain the last note. Careful. Very good ! (I'll continue later)

This is just one greatest lesson of a life time!! This is mind blowing... I learned unbelievable amount of things from this world’s finest pianist in 30 mins. To see this, I can say I learned almost nothing from all my teachers including college professors in decades. Nothing compares. Mr. Cyprien just functions in TOTALLY DIFFERENT RELAM of art, beauty, and higher plain (yeah like a real channeler of HEAVEN!).. The more I understand what he is doing, the more he blows my mind. Thank you so very much for this truly priceless lesson🙏✨🎹♥️👏🏻💐✨ You changed my life, Merci Sir Cyprian✨. It is a miracle that we can access to this level of lesson here. Thank you for uploading!

Thanks for posting!

@@marshan1226 What are you talking about? What did I say that you didn't understand? Granted, my French isn't perfect, but I know what I'm talking about: I am, after all, a professional musician, i.e., a concert pianist and educator. I showed respect in my comment and I expect the same from others who engage with me. Just to clarify, I absolutely love Katsaris. I think he is one of the most incredible and individual pianists living and performing today. I don't always agree with some of the odd things he does, but I always respect them. I also praised the student for a high level of playing and musicality. I hope that clears things up for you. Merci :)
@EliasAxelPettersson

@@marshan1226 That's exactly what I was saying. I have played, performed, recorded, and taught many works, including many of those by Chopin. Katsaris clearly does not always follow precisely what is in the score if one is, shall we say, a literalist. The reason I respect him so much is because he subjectively "interprets" (a subjective word by its nature) what the score says. Sometimes, I don't agree with exactly "how" he interprets the notes, or at least what's hidden behind the notes, but I am always fascinated by his choices and respect them for the most part (i.e., 99% of the time). You are right that the concept of "correct" is a bit subjective, but there is also some objectivity to it. Of course, this can change depending on the age/era we live in. This spurned an entire debate in the Golden Age of pianism as to what is accetable and what isn't. It led to an entire movement of performance practice as well, which has stalwart advocates on both sides that make good arguments (I'm thinking of Landowska, Gould, and the like). Anyway, I didn't want to come across as callous towards Katsaris. On the contrary. While I don't think, objectively, he might follow all of the markings in a particular score, the ideas he creates from his interpretations of those markings (or even some he just makes up, as we all do), are amazing. Cheers!

I recentely realized that every pianist has in his/her repertoire this Scherzo, it's one of those pieces that students tend to want to do, and I read that Liszt prohibted students to bring this piece to his masterclasses, now i know why; we ALL want to do this damn piece. Is time to change, let's practice something else; all teachers should start to become aware of this and have a list of all those pieces that all students want to play becasue is beautiful for beginners. There are several different piano pieces that all of us want to start practice as beginners, these pieces should be avoided to bring at final exams tests, at masterclasses and at concerts. If I were a teacher I would create a list of those pieces that students are not allowed to bring.
