I recently bought the D.W. TCP, I did so because I wanted a high end, high relatability 1911. After watching several reviews, I went with the TCP. I love everything about this gun! From the weight, finish, size, sights, and high end parts and fitting. Plus, the bull barrel is amazing on accuracy! Extremely happy on my purchase. If I had to do it all over again I would still buy the TCP. Both are CZ, the DW just has better quality parts for the money.

This was a piss poor match up. Shooting experience between the two would never match up and the massively heavier CZ was always going to be easier and faster to shoot. Also Dan Wesson specifically mandates a break in because of their extremely tight tolerance for a 1911.

I own the Shadow 2 and the Dan Wesson Vigil both priced at $1200. The Vigil is the low end D.W. and is considered a duty/carry 1911 in 9mm and holds 8 +1. The Dan Wesson is very tight out of the box and requires about 300 rounds and run wet for break in. Both are similarly accurate but very different as the Shadow 2 is a competition pistol and less suited for duty/carry. The Vigil comes with red fiber optic front sights and blacked out rear sight similar to the Shadow 2. Dan Wesson's need to be broken in peroid.

As someone who makes holsters I've had experience with a lot of different guns. Many of the people who I've made holsters for buy 1911 type pistols. A surprising number of them buy 9mm commander sized 1911s such as the DW Valkyrie/Guardian, Kimbers, and Springfields. Additionally I typically reach out to them every so often to see how the holster is holding up. Unfortunately many of the people who bought those handguns have had problems ranging from broken extractors, cycling problems, and light primer strike issues. As a result many of them don't carry them anymore. That's not to say they're aren't good ones out there. But I've never had a person tell me they stopped carrying their M&P Shield or Glock 19 because it had too many issues. Also on a side note if you have a 9mm 1911 the only acceptable magazines are Wilson Combat magazines. Everything else is garbage and causes even more cycling issues.

@@PrecisionRifleNetwork I'm not a gunsmith but as far as I'm concerned the Browning type action was never really meant for such short guns. With the correct tolerances it can work properly. However with the barrel nut of most 1911's there's not enough wiggle room for the guns to operate freelee. I'm fairly certain there's more to it than that but I think that's one of the main issues with the short 9 millimeter 1911's.

I use the poor man's Shadow... a SP-01 with 200 bucks worth of Cajun Gun Works upgrades. That's hammer, flat trigger (I hate the curved trigger) plus three spring kit. Result is a gun that shoots better than I ever will. If I use a something to brace against it will just put them in a ragged hole at 50 feet until I get bored. The SP-01 holds eighteen plus one and has night sights standard. The design just sucks up recoil, I've watched my wife double tap eighteen rounds, that is nine doubles and the widest pair was under two inches. All were in an eight inch circle. Cajun and CZ for the win every time.

Hey, I'm glad you compared these. While I am a diehard fan of 1911s I appreciate the review and the honesty of the malfunction and showing it. I had a malfunction during a range visit very similar what you had with the TCP with my Springfield TRP. It locked up the slide so badly the range officer had to dig the casing out of the weapon with his KaBar to get the slide to drop. It was out of action for a good 10 minutes and it was sold shortly after that. I had heard Dan Wesson made a better 1911 than Springfield, but I guess it's not that much better if it's having the same issue. It looks like the only 1911/2011s to trust are the ones priced way more than I'm willing to pay for a reliable weapon. By the way, for anyone that might make a comment of it being new and needing to be broken in, it wasn't new. it had 3,000 rounds through it and in those 3,000 were a plethora of failures to function.

The STI Tactical 4.0 SS 9mm weighs 38.2 oz - I added it to the comparison cause it's a 1911 like the TCP, but has a full dust cover like the Shadow. Again, my opinion but I think the "best use" case for the Shadow is for competitive shooting.

I'm just going to throw my opinion and experience out there. Other people's experience may vary. I bought a Dan Wesson valkyrie commander 9mm (now discontinued) and in my 2 years I have not had a single malfunction (knocking on wood). And I am using only stock mags that came with the gun. Put 3 different types of self defense ammo in 1 mag (RIP, Winchester hollow points, and another type of 9mm that looks like a drill bit and Philip's head in one (cant remember the brand)) all have fired flawlessly no malfunctions. The shooting is super smooth. Accurate. Great weight. And yes pricey but I got what I paid for. I have gone through about 8 1911s from age 21-23. Iv tested Springfield, colt, kimber, and Dan Wesson. If I were to put it in order it would be DW, kimber, Springfield and colt. However this list is a matter of opinion and only tested models that were barrel length between 3in -4.25in. 9mm and 45acp. I know Dw is owned by czusa and the guns in this video are for sure different in style and functionality. I would just prefer the 1911 (maybe not the tcp) but in general the 1911 model is what i personally like. It's just my opinion I'm not trying to sway anyone to choose what I like, I know other people have other tastes and preferences when it comes to firearms.

DW also makes and ECP (slightly shorter barrel) I own both the Shadow 2 and the ECP and never had a problem with either. These two guns are for different purposes so comparing is very hard to do. The Shadow 2 is a fantastic target pistol and worth every dime, just a joy to shoot. The TCP and ECP are designed for carry not necessarily target work. The ECP is my favorite carry gun. Good video.

Dan Wesson malfunction was a machine problem not the actual gun.

I purchased the 45 ACP version for this gun for $1700.00. The first trip at the range showed the pistol fired accurately with an excellent trigger pull within the 4lbs range. The grips felt natural in hand and there were no FTF or FTE. However, with just over 100 rounds fired, upon ejection of the last round with the slide locked back to the rear, I was unable to remove the magazine. I was using Wilson Combat 8 round magazines, which are more than up to the task. I sometimes did feel some resistance with the magazine release upon depressing it. I took the gun home, removed the grips, and was able to manipulate the magazine out of the gun. I contacted CZ/Dan Wesson and they were more than accommodating, offering to assess the pistol and repair it if needed at no cost per the warranty with a 6 to 8 week turnaround. However, after communicating with CZ/DW, it was determined I would try the DW magazines manufactured for the pistol. Another trip at the range, and with less than 50 rounds, the magazine stuck in the grip again. I know there could be many contributing factors for this malfunction such as extended grip bushings (which upon inspection was not the case), damaged catch spring, excess downward pressure due to operator error, a burr in the slide release compromising its function as well as a number of other issues. However, after owning other model 1911s from Springfield and Kimber and not having critical malfunctions, I was expecting more for $1700.00 from a manufacturer considered to be a step up towards custom 1911s. I am now in the process of fixing this problem, but will most likely not purchase another DW firearm. I know CZ Corporation now owns DW and I love their CZ guns and have had no issues with them. It is a shame however that the CZ name could be discredited with unacceptable quality and control from Dan Wesson.

I resolved the magazine issue, which turned out to be the mag catch. After discussing and addressing the issue with my gun smith, I took the DW back to the range to allow it to save face (I did spend $1700.00 on it). I have to say at 450 rounds, I experienced only one FTF, which is normal break-in activity between 350 and 500 rounds for 1911s. Accuracy was spot on at between 3 and 25 yards with point shooting and using the sights. The recoil was more than manageable and allowed me to get right back on target following every shot. I found myself loving this piece of hardware. After all was said and done, I think I may be in the market for another DW and chalk the magazine catch issue to an infrequent CQ problem. As it turns out, I am now happy with my purchase as this will now be my carry gun: go figure.

Now that Dan Wesson is making the DWX it's even more painful for me. I am saving for a Shadow 2 but that thing gives me a bit if a pause on if I want to save a bit longer.
