During a news conference on Monday, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said that the off-duty officer was driving to work in his personal vehicle when he noticed a car driving erratically. The car abruptly stopped in front of the officer, and then one suspect exited the vehicle and fired at the officer. The officer was injured, but was able to get a partial plate and call it into the police department before driving himself to the Fourth District police station, Smith said.
The captain was then promptly taken to the hospital, Smith added. He sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is now recovering with his family in the hospital. He has been on the job for 18 years, Smith said.
