I was there with my day Tom Pead he was a Normandy veteran. He landed on D-Day 7.20 in the morning. His landing craft was full of fuel. He kept the vehicles supplied with fuel. So glad he made it home.

Every time I watch this I get tears in my eyes. My father was a WW II vet who was involved with D-Day -- these men literally saved the world and we owe all of them a great debt of thanks.

That is so true. Every once in a while I watch the West Point Cadet Glee Club's version of this (the kettle drum is awesome -- at the beginning I remember the movie showing the Allied armada coming into view on the horizon of the Channel). They also show great archival footage. Then I watch this and see some of the men who were there that day and it gives me chills -- and the Rangers ascending the cliffs of Pont du Hoc. We're fortunate there are some of them are still with us. I wish my Dad was.

I was there for this. There were German vets there. One whom I spoke with in St. Mere-Eglise was a Panzer commander who was missing his legs.

These old soldiers should be the role models for the youth of today. Not the likes of David Beckham, John Terry and others. These are REAL men .... and heroes one and all.

Even on D-Day, the Allies were not sure if they could really defeat the Nazi. I am free because of this. I am free because of the battles fought and won by the Allies. I am free. May God (however you may view God) bless you.

An old American stood at the French Customs Desk looking for his Passport. The Agent finally looked at the old man and began to berate him for not having his passport out. "Well I didn't need it the last time I was here." the old man said. The Official responded, "That is ridiculous as no one can enter France without a Passport. How did you get into the Country without one?" The old man looked up for a moment and replied, "I parachuted in on D-Day sir." You could have heard a pin drop.

no not at all, I've met quite a few while stationed in Germany and most of the are VERY proud of their service to their country as all veterans usually are... they're almost universal in their condemnation of their CINC however which is no surprise.

There are lots of USSR flags on May 9th every year at the Red Square. You should be satisfied with that.

I guess I always thought that the Germans were part of D-day, but I didn't see any of their vets and only what looks like a sideways flag in the parade, or am I missing something?

S Edpin ...Don’t talk garbage. The Soviets were engaging the majority of the German forces. If those Germans were in Normandy, the allies could never have had a successful landing.

Jonathan H, this event was about D-Day. The Soviet Union was NOT involved. They were busy fighting Germans in the USSR. You might not have noticed, but that’s fairly far from Normandy, France.

Erwin Rommel, brush up on your geography, man! The СССР had no troops at Normandy on D-Day. They were too busy fighting the Germans in Russia, which is pretty far east from France. (By the way, before anyone says something really stupid, I typed СССР in Russian, rather than USSR in English. That’s the Cyrillic alphabet in use there).
