It’s a story 75 years in the making.
The Longhorn Alumni Band will march on the beaches of Normandy.
“It’s hard to say without getting emotional,” musician Bill Phillips said. “This is all about the veterans, mainly those who did not come home.”
And, a special trumpet will be used to play taps.
“I’m shaking.” Jeffrey Wank said as held the trumpet.
Shaking because Jeffrey knows where this trumpet has been.
“According to grandpa that trumpet was on his body during D-day,” he said.
Jeffrey said his grandfather was also shot and fell on his trumpet and waited on the beach until help arrived. Miraculously Jeffrey’s grandfather, Richard Wank, survived and used his crumpled trumpet to play taps for his buddies who died on the beach.
Now 75 years later, Kenny Biershank who plays with the Longhorn Alumni Band will breathe new life into the restored trumpet and once again play taps for Richard’s fallen friends.
