I don’t blame people especially Real Madrid fans who are upset that Rodri could win the Ballon Dor over the likes of Jude Bellingham and Vinicius Junior In 50-50 on it as well and while there’s a good case for him, others people that it’s an insult to football and the standards of this game has fallen off if a defensive midfielder wins this award. One on hand, individually, he had the perfect season as a CDM and enjoyed a significant level of success for club and country on the other hand, there’s an argument to be made that he wasn’t even the best player on his team, he was decent in the champions league and other players on his team performed better than him. He’s an amazing player and has been an elite midfielder for a while now and Rodri had a brilliant season showcasing his quality whenever his team needed him to putting up excellent performances at the heart of midfield and yes he should be in contention for the Ballon Dor, but he shouldn’t win it. Part of why I say that is because he didn’t even win any of the individual awards in the premier league, Phil Foden his own teammate won premier league player of the season, PFA Player of the Year and he wasn’t nominated for one of those awards and when everyone is healthy, as I’ve said before, he’s arguably not the best midfielder on Manchester City and yet he should win the Ballon Dor. For the Spain national team, yes he won the EUROs as the player of the tournament and he played well he was their most important player, but other players on that team were better than him, there was no frontrunner for player of the tournament at the EUROs and that’s because many elite players couldn’t translate their club form with the national team and that’s part of why they gave it to him when someone like Lamine Yamal could’ve easily been player of the tournament despite being a teenager and I thought he would win it. Him not being the best player for either club and country in combination with him getting knocked out of the champions league was a reason why he wasn’t discussed as a potential contender for this award going into the start of these major tournaments. Also, when they won the final against England, he was subbed off at half time and yes it wasn’t entirely his fault, that’s enough proof that for someone who’s a Ballon Dor contender, he wasn’t as impactful to his team as we think he was, I’m not saying they would’ve won the EUROs without him as having a player of his ability he makes everyone around him better which is a good thing, I just don’t think that he was their best performing player. Given the season that Rodri had individually, he should at least finish in the top 3 for the Ballon Dor.

Rodri is a genuine contender for the Ballon Dor and whether he deserves to win it or not, it’s very subjective in a sense that his achievements for club and country last season deserves a lot of recognition. He was excellent individually, I mean as a defensive midfielder, he had 9 goals and 14 assists 23 G/A in all competitions considering the position he was playing in, those numbers were very impressive since he was doing a lot of work both in attack and defense and most of his performances throughout the season were consistent as week in week out he was an 8/10 always performing well at an elite level and was pulling the strings in midfield with ease. He didn’t win as many trophies as he did in the 2022-23 season, he was better individually last season and he helped Manchester City win the premier league while going undefeated in every league game he played in as he’s gone a full year without losing a game in the premier league. All of their losses came when he didn’t play which is a testament to how impactful he is to their team and it’s easy to say that Manchester City are a star studded team and they should be winning every trophy in every competition they play in, since Arsenal was giving them a run for their money in the title race, without him, I don’t think they would’ve won the league. Before the FA Cup final against Manchester United, he was undefeated in his last 74 games that’ve been played in full time which is a ridiculous record from him. He wasn’t just excellent at club level last season, he won the EUROs with Spain as the best player in the tournament and while it was a topic of debate as to whether or not he played well during that tournament as other players on that team performed better than him, it shouldn’t take anything away from the role he played in the team. When it came to providing balance and allowing others to flourish, he was their most important player as he was the glue of their team and he didn’t produce some of the most dominant performances I’ve ever seen, there were games where he played very well. Not to mention that he has also gone a full year without losing a game for Spain as well. Regardless of what people think, whether they like or not even though he might not win, at the end of the day, we shouldn’t ignore the fact that it’s an international year and when it comes to the Ballon Dor, international football is equally as important as what a player achieved at club level and we all know that a player can have a good season for their club, the chances of winning this award also depends on what a player did for the national team in a major tournament. Despite being a CDM, Rodri has better stats and more trophies won than Luka Modric during the season where he won the Ballon Dor and as great as Modric was at the World Cup where he helped Croatia reach the final, at the end of the day, he didn’t win it. It’s insane that in a span of 18 months a defensive midfielder is winning champions league player of the season and player of the tournament at the EUROs which is a testament to how influential of a player he is to his respective teams, since the start of 2023 for club and country he had more trophies and individual awards won than games lost and while he probably won’t win the Ballon Dor, he has done enough to be in contention regardless.

For those who support Rodri for the Ballon d'Or 👇 An MVP in the entire Premier League against the last placed team Never voted the Premier League player of the month Outside the 8 candidates for the Premier League MVP award Only 1 MVP in the Champions League knockout stage against Copenhagen For 11 months he was never the favorite, that changed after the Euro, so far so good, until we see his statistics in the Euro: 7 games 1 goal 0 assists 0 big chances created 3 yellow cards Substituted at half-time in the final Fabian Ruiz in the Euro: 7 games 2 goals 2 assists 1 big chance created 1 yellow card Starter throughout the tournament In other words, Rodri was not the best player for Manchester City and he was not even the best midfielder in Spain "Ah but Rodri went 74 games without losing, without Rodri on the field City lost 3 games" In these 3 games that City played, De Bruyne was out in 2 and in the other 4 starters were on the bench In conclusion: Rodri is being pushed by the media to win the Ballon d'Or, the real dispute is between Vini Jr and Bellingham
