Love Atlas Preservation. You always have all the supplies we need. Doing it a year now, i had to get a collapsable wagon to carry all my water, D2, pump sprayers, so many brushes, plastic scrapers, plastic trowels, gloves and finally bought a hand held weed eater. Helps so much to clean up all around the stone. I love cleaning stones so much. I'm hooked and want to clean every spare moment. My husband and I are cleaning an entire Civil War Confederate section to include thep monuments in WV. Probably take us another year. We've worked since April this year and have about 1/2 done. Harsh winter will drive me nuts because I cant clean.. Great job as always. Everything you touch looks beautiful. Especially like seeing you and Wade work together. We need more saint's like you.

There are few things more gratifying than to see what the small amount of penetrated D2 [after a water rinse] can do for a tablet after a "winter cure" [October to April] . Near where my husband is buried, there is an Old Section. There is one Revolutionary Soldier and his family buried there, the only one in the cemetery. I was privileged to clean those sandstone tablets; while teaching some of our neighbors, one September. We went back for a visit in early April. I needed sunglasses...what a thrill to see a tablet go from blotchy black and illegible, to gleaming beige with even the Scripture epitaph speaking to the world again.

It's fun to take the words of an old, obscure engraved hymn excerpt, Scripture, or even a homily, and use Google to source it to an author. It's also fun to add "before and after" pix to Find A Grave memorials and local genealogical looseleaf histories of these pioneers.

I like to scrape the thick crud off from top to bottom stroking downward. After the rinse I prefer to clean the front off with brushes first, because the remaining crud is generally thinner on the front. If I brush the back first, it's harder to get crud out of the brushes for the front. If you are watching your water supply, the less used to clean brushes the less schlepping for water. Depends on how far a schlepp! I have a bum leg.

You need to completely wet the stone before you start scraping or putting D2. You also need to let D2 sit for 10-15 minutes before you start scrubbing. Then when fully clean spray D2 again and walk away. Thanks for what you do. Enjoyed your video. God Bless.

Ditto The manufacturers say 10-15 minutes, and specifies it is a stain remover, not necessarily for "gunk." And a scraper is a scraper, I don't care what it's made from. I've seen some horrific suggestions on amateur cemetery explorer channels, including steel wool (brillo pads). People want to do what's easiest for them, not what's best for the stone.

D2 will burn grass tips but goes away with mowing. I always cover plants and flowers with large garbage bags. They stay there until all is dry. I always spray the grass and flowers with water before covering just in case any resudual overflowed.

I think you will find that if you wet the stone first with water then scrape with a plastic putty knife to get the major buildups, then D2 and let it work for 20 mins, then brush that it will require less muscle and the results will be better. I put wet it and forget it on at the end and over time the stone will be like new.

It may be nice to see in instant effect, but much better for the stone to just soak it with the anti-fungal solution, and then leave it to the sun and rain to clean off the dead material over a few weeks and months...

D/2 Biological Solution will have no effect on metals. It will not harm them, but it will not clean them either. It is most effective when used on stone, masonry, wood, vinyl and many other hard surfaces. D/2 Biological Solution is a biodegradable, easy to use liquid that removes stains from mold, algae, mildew, lichens and air pollutants. It is effective on marble, granite, limestone, brownstone, travertine, masonry, terra cotta, concrete, stucco, wood, and other architectural surfaces including monuments, sculpture and headstones. A contact time of only 10 to 15 minutes followed by scrubbing with a soft nylon or natural bristle brush will loosen most biological and air pollutant staining.

Some stones have so much thick gunk I have used an egg spatula made of vinyl [like for teflon pans] because it's more flexible and the handle is ergonomic for these old hands of mine. I leave the gunk soak for over 20 minutes and it comes off easier.

Joyce, why not soak the monument with water and then scrub with water to get the heavy growth off first and then add the D2?
@joyceclemons3916
3 жыл бұрын
@@timothybuchanan1611 I do use plain water for that first step. I don't use scrapers on white marble that is old and sugared. But on any other type tablet [even perhaps the harder Vermont gray marble] or base or obelisk etc. that has a mossy layer, I see no point in using the brush until that first looser layer is gone. The tighter gunk under the first layer protects even older non-granite stones from a soft scraper. Of course, all choices of steps have to be sensitive to the condition of the monument. Some should be a "spray and walk" [drench with water and then D2] situation due to a fragile nature. Some stones with signs of delamination beginning should just be left alone until assessed for possible amenity to preofessional repair. Fortunately I have a local expert who is skilled in that, who can offer this service at an affordable cost to a family. Although I have that training, I lack the physical stamina, strength and dexterity to do the more challenging restorations, except as a helper. I am pushing 70 so I figure there is no shame in that. I really enjoy the research, teaching on graveyard safety, assessment, photography for 1st step assessment, and cleaning, to novices. My first priority is to nudge and change the local culture to increase individual's sense of fulfillment with this healthy and vital contribution. Cleaning is a very positive activity for fairly healthy seniors! All that exercise, sunshine, fresh air and socialization!! I hope to increase the knowledge of safe cleaning for the stone and the safe project for the person. It shocked me to learn that some get much too close to aged, off plumb obelisks with spent mortar. Everyone wants to read that worn and dirty inscription, but photography and cropping is all they should be doing, from a distance as far as the whole thing is tall, and then some. I can't imagine the horror of getting killed in a graveyard. Visiting is safe, if these rules are observed.

Joyce, if you're going to do the spray and walkaway approach, why do you spray with water first before spraying the D2? It seems like spraying with water first would just serve to dilute the D2 which he sprayed on right after the water.
@joyceclemons3916
3 жыл бұрын
@@timothybuchanan1611 It's just the way I was taught to do that. Maybe the water removes some surface debris that would be impediment to saturation of the D2. Maybe the D2 strength of solution was calibrated to be used with water, so using water gives the intended strength while minimizing any chemical salts that might weaken the surface or even the inner pores of the stone. Or maybe the water triggers the osmosis or "drawing in" effect and that helps "suck in" the expensive product. I am sure Jonathan knows.

LOL. Your poor fingers. You used 4 different fingers and changed hands 4-5 times. Those little pump bottles are exhausting on the fingers. The D2 works great, but I got a little chuckle out of the finger workout. :0) Water flow is king! If you talk to professional pressure washers, they typically use very little pressure. Unless you're removing paint or removing gum from a sidewalk, you really don't need much more than 1,800 PSI. The baseline professional pressure washer is 4,000 PSI and 4 gallons per minute. Higher end pressure washers are still 4,000 PSI, but 8 gallons per minute. For professional cleaners that do really large surfaces like gas station parking lots or parking garages, they link these together and end up with 4,000 PSI, and 16-24 gallons per minute of water flow. Same here for tombstone cleaning...first, I don't mean to use a pressure washer as it is very harmful for cleaning tombstones, but high water flow and gentle pressure work well. I carry a 4 gallon battery powered backpack sprayer for rinsing. I can rinse like a fiend, have water in case I fling anything into my eyes, wash down my arms to help keep cool on hot days, and the hose/nozzle is lighter than that pump up sprayer. I do use a small pump sprayer like that for applying the D2 though. Oh, edit - I almost forgot. Motorcycle riding glasses are great for cleaning like this. Easier to wear, great coverage, and it essentially seals close tot he face with foam, with slots in the foam for air flow.

Precious friends, when we pray, we cast ourselves at the feet of DIVINE POWER. When writing to the Corinthian church, the apostle Paul shared about the trouble he experienced in the province of Asia. The persecution was so severe that he and his companions “despaired of life itself” (2 Corinthians 1 : 8). However, Paul was helped by the prayers of believers (v. 11). Though the Corinthian church was many miles away from the apostle, their prayers mattered and God heard them. Herein lies an amazing mystery: the sovereign One has chosen to use our prayers to accomplish His purpose. What a privilege! Today we can continue to remember our brothers and sisters in Christ who are suffering for their faith. There’s something we can do. We can pray for those who are marginalized, oppressed, beaten, tortured, and sometimes even killed for their belief in Christ. There truly is divine power in prayer. Begin you journey into the power of prayer by first acknowledging that you are a sinner in need of our Savior. Welcome Abba Yahweh (Father God) through Yeshua (Jesus the Christ) into your life. Confess with your mouth and believe in your heart that Jesus Christ is Lord of your life. Receive grace by believing in Jesus Christ and what He did on the cross, His death, burial and resurrection. You will then be justified in salvation and blessed with His abundant love by the Holy Spirit! Dear friends, let us pray....Dear Heavenly Father, we pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus to experience Your comfort and encouragement and to be strengthened with hope as they stand firmly with Your mighty Son Lord Jesus. May they be covered by His precious blood and guided in righteousness by The Holy Spirt. This and all things we pray in the Mighty Mighty name of Your only begotten Son, our Lord and Savior Yeshua Jesus Christ, Amen! May God bless you in the Glorious name of Jesus Christ our Lord and our Savior.❤️❤️❤️
