What makes the strokes great is that they kept their original sound while still adjusting to the new instrumentals and sounds coming out
@shadetheband
2 жыл бұрын
I love songs from all the phases of the strokes, and I think the main commonality and thing that holds the phases together is Julians vocals and melody writing. It’s hard for me to agree they kept their “original sound” when you compare this album to the earlier classics. To me overall it’s a different feel. I prefer this newer “vibey” sound over the more grungy garage rock sound of old, that being said I still love the old feel when I’m in the mood for it. I guess it just depends how you define what a bands “sound” is.
@shadetheband
2 жыл бұрын
There is truth in what you’re saying as I think about it more. They adapted and changed without losing themselves or the elements that hooked people in the beginning. They certainly didn’t “sell out” or go formulaic. So in that sense you’re right. And I wonder if I’m looking at it too micro, and when you look at the big picture they have always had “their sound” and nothing else sounds quite like The Strokes. I guess what I want to know is if you look at their character arc and compare it with other bands natural progressions, would it be fair to say they completely changed their sound, or that they kept their original sound. At the end of the day, it’s good music and I love where their arc has taken them and can’t say the same about all the bands I’ve followed throughout my life.

This is the first reaction that I've watched from you guys (although I've seen your Blonde reaction pop up in my recommended before, so I'll have to check that out!) and I absolutely love your dad's energy lol. He's so excited and it's infectious. About the mixing of Bad Decisions - it's kind of how I feel about their entire first album, Is This It. The vocals sit in kind of a weird place where you feel forced to turn it up and listen to it louder. Obviously a very different style and quality than the rawer, grittier vocals on ITI though. Actually, I think this is the most "forward" Julian's vocals have ever been on an album and I believe that was something Rick Rubin kind of had to fight him on (Rubin wanted them louder), though I could be wrong. At The Door appreciation, we love to see it! Such a gorgeous track, the "emptiness" from the lack of drums is used so effectively. It's so interesting to look at, as other people have said, the progression of their music from their first album to TNA and how they've kind of used every tool in their toolboxes, so to speak (even from the mystical weirdness of Phrazes for the Young and The Voidz), and refined that sound to perfection. It's got such solid guitar melodies and vocals while also having moments of experimentation and strangeness with sounds and autotune. I can definitely see comparisons to Frank Ocean, at least in the way that they create atmospheres using sounds. Also I find it funny whenever your dad describes what he "expected" from the name The Strokes--because he's very correct at least in terms of their earlier music (Heart in a Cage, Juicebox being examples). Sidenote--your dad must have heard Reptilia or Someday before, right?? I don't know much about you guys, but from someone who seems to have such an extensive knowledge of music I can't believe he wouldn't have heard those songs out in public, even in passing.
