«Royce da 5'9" spoke to Complex about Eminem giving this track to Jay Z and the making of this track in general: "We needed something for the album for both of us to be on. We had ‘Rock City’ done already, but I didn’t have an Em verse and he was executive producing the project. So he went to his house-that’s when he was recording at his crib, in his home studio. When I got there he was already making the beat. As soon as he was done making the beat, I took it home. I wrote some stuff to it, then took it back to his house the next day. When I got there he already had his first verse and the first half of the hook done. I went in and did the second half of the hook, laid my verse, and then we finished it from there. I did that after Em did ‘Dead Wrong,’ so I [used the same flow he used] because I was on a song with him. It was a pretty easy breezy session. Jay-Z was at a deadline and he had been asking Em to get on something. Em didn’t want to miss Jay’s deadline because obviously he respects him. I don’t think he had time to go in and do a whole new joint, so he called me and asked if I was cool with just giving Jay that one and we’ll just do something else. I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s cool.’ Why would I feel regret if that’s one of Em’s signature songs? That’s a great thing for him, and I don’t think the song would’ve reached the potential it reached with him and Jay-Z if it was me and him because Interscope wouldn’t even clear him for that song anyways. I think it was something where they were willing to give us video rights for ‘Rock City,’ but if they cleared ‘Renegade’ we wouldn’t get single rights. It was a long time ago so I can’t really remember, but I do remember there was a little bit of politics involved to where I’m glad that he gave it to Jay because the song would never have reached the potential it was supposed to reach. It’s a good thing." » (Source: Genius)

@@OuterSpace90 yea i think he is just talking some shit haha. Its just lyrically the verses in renegade aren't even in the same league (nothing against Jay as he is one of the all time greats). Obviously some of these examples aren't as far apart lyrically but nonetheless its arguable to say Eminem has "won" on these songs, (or at the very least a vast majority of them) again its nothing against Jay he does it to everybody, "Forever", "Drop the world" "thats all she wrote", "dead wrong", "Lord Above", Caterpillar" (though Royce is cold, hes one of the only ones who can consistently hang with em lyrically), "Best Friend", :No Favors" "Speedom", "Homicide", "airplanes part 2", "Dont approach me" etc.

About the poet verse, Em said on Genius: When I’m writing, I’m in the syllable game. I’m connecting 5-6-7-8 syllable phrases where every syllable rhymes. I get heavy into that. When I start rapping something, and I think of more syllables that connect with it, sometimes I want to just keep the scheme going forever. I’ve done it before in songs, where the syllable scheme of the first verse ends up being the syllable scheme of the second verse, and the third verse - all the way down. I do it because the lines start connecting and making sense. Once I find something and lock in, it comes out pretty quick. GOAT !

DADS just my input, which maybe wrong: Jay Z's reference to the Bodega was he was about rob it ie do what he had to do. Lots of people died on the park bench ie people who lost to the hustle and people who died from drug. What are you hollering (crying) for ie Man up and stop crying...do something. Jesus Christ to these Latter day Saints Em is the saviour to these Mormons but also the younger generation (saints of the later modern days)ie Em saved some people championed their cause, said and did what they were not able to do for themselves. Whistling Dixie the southern conservative belt of Christians also racist and impartial towards rap in that time..devil's music.. We the people ie reminder that you are Americans the constitution upholds freedom of speech and also the acceptance of each other in America. The people decide not the government so a reminder to the government that they are not in charge but democracy is. Remember that Ice Cube also wrote F*** the Police. He was also very vocal against things going on at that time and the government and religion, especially after the Rodney King riots. But Ice Cube wrote raw lyrics about issues in the ghetto that nobody wanted to address.Royce said he only pays attention to chicks when they say they about to blow can also mean a real woman about to have an orgasm. They would give Proof the mic to go after these guys and something about a type of drink or was that a magazine. They were not going to mediate as in seeking no truce or hold Em back when he goes after them. I know I missed one that I wanted to write down too. Did I mention that I love your reactions. I love how you still pay attention to the bars and not only the video. You guys, Crypt, JayBlac and No Life Shaq are some of the best reactions and a pleasure to watch.

you're just spoiling us at this point, LOL. I'd say Em killed it, content aside, his rhyme scheme in the first verse is unreal,he had a 5 syllable end rhyme (shoes-fit-I-wear-it) in addition to various internals, complex rhymes and assonance with the vowel "OU" throughout the whole verse. Easily one the most lyrically advanced verses in HISTORY.

You gotta consider everything cause in rhyme scheme em, in lyrical potency jay killed it, content jay, word play em, so how do you ssay who beat who, when they both clear different areas of rappin

Royce really is so fire. He needs that respect. "I got a skunk in my trunk I'm lying, I got a pump in my trunk who dying?". Flipping lines. The double entendres. That can of worms dirt line. FLIPPING HELL. Okay. So he's... QUADRUPLE?!?! This is why Em doesn't talk about Renegade. HARD AS NAILS. Jay-Z was amazing on Renegade, but it might've been better without him. My world is shattered.
