I think I’ve figured out why the sammyang 2x heat level is so variable, sometimes it’s super spicy to me other times it’s not even close. Since the sauce is water soluble, the amount of water left makes a big difference. If I strain the noodles thoroughly in a colander before adding the sauce, I consistently get the highest heat level. If I leave a few spoonfuls of water like it says in the directions, it’s much milder.

So my findings contrast most of the commenters findings 1. Both Samyang 3x and 2x was hotter than the ghost pepper noodles, but the 2x only slightly hotter 2. As with you samyang was tastier, but I enjoy both, as they are deliscious compared to dollar store ramen 3. The ghost pepper burnt my stomach quicker than samyang, but samyang is still hotter. 4. I don't know if its the oil or what, but these 8000 scoville noodles are more painful to eat for me, than an actual habanero which is 300 000 scovilles. I cant understand that.

What comes to extracts, I try to avoid them. I can gobble down chilies, chili sauces etc and no issues, stomach does not react. Extracts? Heartburn, cramps and metallic aftertaste. I found exactly the same thing you did with the 2xSpicy. The first time I tried it I finished the bowl but it was close to painful. The next time I mixed it weaker and that seemed too weak. The next time it was full strength and been that way ever since. And it doesn't ruin your taste buds. Back to normal in 10 minutes. Odd the way the first time it is like fire but next time much more enjoyable. And you're right about the noodles too. Much better quality.

Great video! The reason why they may have seemed to flip-flop on the heat level is that the initial inflection will get you to a level of tolerance that takes quite a while for your receptors to reset. Thanks Phil, great insight! After eating both several more times I’ve also come to realize that the amount of water left before mixing in the sauce makes a noticeable difference. @philchouinard9178

@@AGuThing Interesting observation. In leaving the additional liquid, do you think that "washes" some of the powder/capsaicin off the noodles? I only say that because I've observed that putting extract/powder in most-liquid foods tends to produce a much hotter sensation, mainly because of the non-water soluble nature of capsaicin... where the liquid actually distributes the capsaicin into more places within the mouth, resulting in contacting more receptors. Of course, pain is like taste -- and is a bit subjective in that different people are impacted differently. In any case, really enjoyed watching that, since I've had the 2x before and will be getting the Daebak soon. You provided some great insight on what to expect.
@AGuThing
2 жыл бұрын
@@philchouinard9178 Glad you enjoyed the video! I think the sauce itself plus whatever residual moisture is left in the noodles is enough to thoroughly coat all the noodles. So any additional liquid doesn’t increase how well it’s spread out but just dilutes the heat concentration. Scoville heat units are a measure of concentration, so with more water, the ratio of capsaicin to non-capsaicin is lower, effectively reducing the SHU of the meal.
