Either way for my eclectic taste, those two being so out of tempo with each other was making me nuts. His explanation of breath was good. He seems like he knows what he was talking abbot but every time I was like "What the?!?" was when he had on the biggest smile. Do what you like. There is an audience for everyone. Create. What I think some people may miss about this, is that it takes some rare sort of a “polymath” to be able to conceive of, and then give, this kind of presentation. This guy would be impressive if he was merely a “pure humanities” kind of guy, expounding on paradoxes around Art. However: he also has a rare degree of mastery around electronic instruments. And crucially, he knows both the “art” and “science” sides well-enough to meaningfully synthesize (no pun intended) them together.

I'm a massively budget conscious bedroom producer. Over the years I've had several 808 style patterns and ideas floating around. I tried to do some of them on VSTs years ago, and they sounded a bit thin, flat and lacking. I tried to coax my Volca Beats to do some of it and worked my guts out to try to get it somewhat okay -- even though the snare drum on the Beats is definitely not up to scratch for the task, and I had to adapt to make the best of it I could. Got the TR-8 yesterday. And I had my ideas playing through the speakers in less than 3 minutes. In less than 3 minutes from opening the box, I had the first usable drum groove. One that I have tried to create on other machines several times. I know there are other drum machines, with other drum sounds, that are more flexible, more controllable -- but if you want an 808 sound, and you want to quickly get to those ideas -- the TR-8 is the way to go.

With all the remakes you would think Roland, Yamaha and others would just re-do them PART FOR PART. Korg got it almost right with the Mini MS20 they did a GREAT job on it, just a little cheap for my taste, but it works!
@iNuchalHead
8 жыл бұрын
Some of the parts might not be mfg'ed anymore. Since these vintage devices were analog, everything matters... if you can't get the same kind of tubes or transistors of the same type, made with the same grade if semiconductor or whatever, then that will have an effect on the signal and it is not the same. OTOH, this can all be digitally modeled, but that's lame. Point is, part-for-part, hand-made is becoming more impossible every day. Only Stradivari made Stradivarius violins, and vintage cannot be faked.
@PureAmbientDrone

Good points there, my dad is a Ham Radio guy and he says they still make the parts in other countries for classic radios, but that's radios, I don't know about the MUSIC stuff of yesterday. The cost would be real high if they had to make that stuff again to build them. But there is still a lot of stuff today being made that IS analog and you would think Roland would go analog like Korg has. Roland made some of the BEST gear out there but their marketing strategy is leading them away from analog. Behringer has even made the leap into analog instruments with the up coming DEEPMIND 12 which I WILL OWN :)

Dearest Sarah, Lest I should not be able to write you again, I feel impelled to write lines that may fall under your eye when I shall be no more. Indications are very strong that my electronic music combo shall tour in a few days. Our tour may be one full of pleasure -- and it may be one of severe conflict and death to me. If it is necessary that I should fall on the dance floor for my sub-genre of Ambient Dub, I am ready. I have no misgivings about, or lack of confidence in, the Roland synthesizers that I use, and my courage does not falter. I know how strongly Electronic Music now leans upon the triumph of Ambient Dub, and how great a debt we owe to those who went before us through the club drugs and warehouses of the Rave Culture. And I am willing -- perfectly willing -- to lay down all my joys in this life, to help maintain Ambient Dub, and to pay that debt. But, my dear wife, when I know that with my own joys I lay down nearly all of yours, and replace them in this life with cares and sorrows -- when, after having eaten for long years the bitter fruit of Chicago House myself, I must offer it as their only sustenance to my dear little fans -- is it weak or dishonorable, while the banner of my purpose floats calmly and proudly in the breeze, that my unbounded love for you, my darling wife and fans, should struggle in fierce, though useless, contest with my love of Ambient Dub? Sarah, my love for you is deathless, like the nearly infinite decay of a highly compressed 808 kick; it seems to bind me to you with mighty 3.5mm patch cables that nothing but Omnipotence could break; and yet my love of Ambient Dub comes over me like a strong wind and bears me irresistibly on with all these patch cables to the club stage. But, O Sarah! If the dead can come back to this earth and flit unseen around those they loved, I shall always be near you; in the brightest day and in the darkest night -- amidst your happiest scenes and your gloomiest hours -- always, always; and if there is a square wave upon your ear, it shall be my voice; or a funky hi hat pattern, it shall be my spirit passing by. Sarah, do not mourn me dead; think I am gone and wait for me, for we shall meet again. Daedelus

(all those 80s pop hits had the most horrid mechanical sounding cheap nasty drum machine noises (michael jackson, madonna etc). though around 13.19 to 20-ish, those dirty pots on the tr-8 REALLY show! this guy would probably be a pretty good tutor if you were doing a course as he seems to understand we all need different things from our devices.

The biggest issue is the TR-8's inability to integrate into a studio workflow. Notice all the instrument outs on the TR-808 compared to the TR-8. I suspect deploying all these outs on the newer Roland products would have decreased their bottom line. However, if you look at any other reputable analog drum machines on the market within the last 5-7 years, they've all got instrument outs for effects routing and tracking. So why is Roland scaling down on such a key functionality ? Saving money !!!!!

Jacob Pauls Nothing is stopping any company from pushing the outer limits of sound design and that's as it should be. I am trying to articulate the frustration that aesthetically and functionally the 808 is the essence of a drum machine instrument. This instrument has stood the test of time and spawned millions of imitations while the original is coveted like a stradivarius. But it doesn't need to be that way, this is a mass produced piece of machinery. Did Fender ever stop making Stratocasters? Why would they? They sound great and people want them. The same is true of the 808.
@hubaswift7640
8 жыл бұрын
Well said, but i think you missed part of my point. I agree with everything you said and think it would be a great idea to remake the 808, but there's not much you could do when it comes to sourcing obsolete parts. One of the reasons the Stratocaster still lives on is because potentiometers, resistors, and capacitors (essentially all the electronics in a guitar) are still all easy to source, which is not true of the 808. So it's not an issue with it being a bad idea, it is a great idea and if they did remake it I would buy it, but rather it's an issue of if it's actually feasible or even possible by any practical means.
@theothertonydutch

Quantity would make it cheap. It has already been developed. The problem with Roland is Roland: Roland has never been good at reading their market. People demand analog, they come up with more virtual analog. Look at Korg. They make what people want, and we can afford it. Even Behringer is playing into this now.
