I still enjoy the story, The biggest mistake i feel the show is making is that it isn't about Aegon and Rhaenyra and their family. It is too much about Alicent and Rhaenyra. All promo shoots or photos do that, too. Alicent is standing first and after Aegon and stuff.

On the Alicent stopping the war bit, I think rhaynera still believes that alicent has influence over the court and her son, at least enough to bring the war to a temporary halt and reopen negotiations. She is still mourning the loss of her own son and alicent the loss of her grandson so there was still some sympathy and desperation left that allowed her to think that way. Is it a bit contrived though? Absolutely, but the scene was needed for the next episode which looks like the battle of rooks rest where the dragons will truly be unleashed.

I loved the whole episode. Everyone saying that the final scene ruined it is just a nerd who can't have fun. I think that if we had seen the contents of Alicent's note, and if we had seen more of the planning for the heist, then critics would find it more believable. But remember that the show has spent the last 5 episodes highlighting how both Alicent and Rhaenyra are trying to avoid bloodshed and they still love each other (Alicent saying Rhaenyra would make a fine queen, sending the torn-out page, the note). AND we got foreshadowing in the winesink scene where Ulf is like "how do you know what the late king looked like?" Olivia Cooke and Emma Darcy's acting sold the scene for me. Every single movement and expression was full of meaning. I was gripped!

Excellent stuff. I like how you point out the many times Rhaenyra has cleaned up after Daemon going back to the start of Season 1. That is why I do not buy this show BS that it took this long for Rhaenyra not to trust Daemon. Was she not watching her own show? Plus, her saying "I want Aemond Targaryen" and that is it. She left it up to Daemon to interpret. It did not sound like she wanted to talk to Aemond to find out what really happened. She wanted him dead. If Daemon had not had Jaehaerys killed when Aemond could not be found, there would have been no vengeance on that day. Clearly Rhaenyra was openly calling for that. She is in charge so she is responsible. Someone, I believe Mysaria, even told her to her face, Rhaenyra is responsible.

The Burning Mill cut scene was immaculate & got the point across about the brutality of war...Feast for Crows. It was also baiting & switching the audience for the actual battle next episode. GoT did it constantly in s2 before Blackwater. Overloading with battles takes away the novelty. Let the casuals who complained about it stick to their mindless action flicks. Meanwhile targ stans mad about Ulf & Baelon? Oh no, a royal prince sired a bastard & water is wet! Where did they think those dragonseeds came from? Look at the timeline even in the book & it's clear some rather recent Targaryen in KL was fooling around. Helaena's "I forgive you" is a prophetic present tense literary device. She's talking about something that hasn't happened yet...the window. Brilliant writing! Just like groomer Daemon's ideal vision of Rhaenyra being stuck at 15 year old. Scary. The "I swear to you on the memory of my mother" clapback is the best line of the series so far. Finally, Rhaenyra is not whitewashed. Her treatment of Rhaena was a sign that Rhaenyra will ultimately be submerged by the system she's trying to change. She will leave everyone disillusioned, which is the point they're making about the immutability of autocracy. Rhaenyra's subtle selfishness & ego has been so beautifully characterized. Placing her sons & heirs above all, asking her own orphan step child to play surrogate, all in the place where said child lost her own mother. No remorse & a complete cognitive dissonance. Rhaenyra is such a triumph of adaptation I have so much faith they’re going to manage to successfully pull off her tragedy. She hypocritically outsources motherhood to Rhaena & assigns her that passive feminine role. As a character Rhaenyra is most fascinating when she's forced to navigate & perpetuate the gendered structures she despises & wishes she could transcend. Rhaena is clearly straining against the fact that if she has no dragon she is to be relegated to childcare while Baela gets at least some freedom (or the illusion of it). It’s a nuanced situation & I'm thrilled that they've given Rhaena the dimension to be dissatisfied with this position (the book doesn't give her much of anything). Conflict is good! & Rhaenyra’s central conflict- that to gain & retain power within a violent system one must perpetuate those violences, no matter one’s honorable intentions- having its seeds sown here is just really smart writing.
@Rocsanna

This is an awesome comment, very insightful and I completely agree with everything you said. Actually, I haven’t seen Rhaenyra in that light, but that is because I wasn't paying attention and missed all the nuances. You're spot on - and I do believe you may be right about the window and 'I forgive you' - it would make sense for this character they've created. Overall I have really enjoyed the writing and how complex and real all the characters feel.

The House of the Dragon showrunners are making the same mistake that the GoT showrunners made, that is opting for spectacular visuals and melodramatic scenes that defy logic. The Rhaenys on Meleys in the Dragonpit and the Rhaenyra disguised as a septa scenes are just two examples. I also have an issue with the casting changes on HotD. In the book Aegon II, Helaena and Aemond were in their late teens/early 20s when the main conflict erupted. The show already had actors who were the right age playing these characters but in their wisdom the showrunners decided to "age them up" while keeping the same actress in the role of their mother, so now we have people aged 25 to 29 playing the children of a 30 year old actress. It's so profoundly stupid.

I actually quite liked this episode, including the final scene between Alicent and Rhaenyra at the Sept. It seems silly upon first glance, but it relates back to so many things (Like Daemons vision where Rhaenyra says she has to "clean up his messes" or whatever, when she lied about him touching her as a teenager, and the "sin begats sin" line, and how Otto didn't want to hear Alicent's confession last episode, etc), and I NEVER thought that Alicent truly believed Viserys changed his mind at the end. That's just what she _wanted_ to believe to justify her own behavior. Maybe it's my Christian upbringing showing (nothing against Christianity or religion itself at its core), but I've encountered plenty of self-righteous "Bible thumpers" who tell themselves lies in order to "justify" their own shitty behavior against others... And I think that's the angle they were going for

@alyssao517
3 ай бұрын
@@ericmarley7060you realize that was never an official law right? Westeros never had a set succession law and many different Targaryen kings had a preference on what the succession should be. @ericmarley7060

@@alyssao517 Of course, many Targaryen Kings had preferences, but their preferences for who should be heir are irrelevant. The custom of all of Westeros (except much of Dorne) for thousands of years is that a son comes before a daughter. No King can unmake this. The Conqueror's Crown is a symbol of authority and a reference to Aegon's namesake. In the eyes of the smallfolk, it is seen as proof that he has the right to rule.

The Rhaenyra sneaks into KL with no actual idea for a compromise was such a bad plan! And Alicent not having Rhaenyra taken captive was also ridiculous. I feel like the writers want to make all the female characters 'nicer' and in doing so they are making them just stupid. Even Mysaria doesn't seem to have half the wits she should, to have actually trusted Otto Hightower. I'm getting worried about where the writing is going here.

Seeing how they tame down the incest in House of the Dragons, I doubt that we would see much of Aegon relationship with his sisters, even that I would like a less rosy picture of Aegon the Conqueror, he "uniting" the realms only caused more bloodshed and death, that all the wars between the Great Noble Houses prior the conquest, like the Norman Invasion, it seems that the Seven Kingdoms were more stable prior the invasion Aegon.

Honestly, characters like Rhaenys aren't meant to be argumentatively consistent, being dejected and championing women is most of her character. She wants women to inherit, does not bow to Rhaenyra during her crowning; and I would be surprised if she didn't have a heroic last battle end of the season; possibly also slag off Corlys more as she does chip at his self esteem during many conversations. The problem with a bitter cynic about "the way of things" is that they will die and not be challenged when societal commentary is an undercurrent. Rhaenys won't ever make a bad decision that receives accurate criticism, due to I think there being a writer's preference that peace is always good and even during war question it, but I think Rhaenyra's lack of conflict resolution bar talking to Daemon last episode makes her look weak. It puzzles me to follow a kind of stereotype that women are peaceful and less aggressive rulers, Queen Meve in the Witcher books or Queens of antiquity show it's simply not the case, there's nothing wrong with a peacable Queen speaking up and I know it's *intentional* but hearing her backtalked by Dragonstone nobodies makes me hate them and find her more feeble than she should be

I wouldn’t go by GoT wiki, nor Andal law. Andal Law doesn’t exist - that’s the point I’m trying to make. There is no codified succession law that makes one heir legally come before another. As for Aegon, we can recognize Aemond is more competent candidate and good chance he would be chosen over Jaehaera - BUT it has not been yet stated in show. lol every single fucking recap, analysis, whatever that I'm watching refuses to understand that Rhaenyra and Alicent keep trying to see each other and beg for peace because THEY LOVE EACH OTHER AND HAVE ALWAYS WANTED TO RUN AWAY TOGETHER AND I WISH THEY HAD DONE IT BEFORE GROSS VISERYS GOT HIS GROSS DICK INTO ALICENT. This is not the delusions of a Rhaenicent shipper, though I am that, it's just. Really clear to me that the writers cast them as the same age and "best friends" (true loves) and mirrors of each other because someone decided to either queerbait those of us who saw them in that first garden scene, head in lap, and went "aww", or because the whole point of them being the two main characters is that they're women who love each other whose relationship was destroyed by their participation in patriarchy. In my heart when Rhaenyra proposed running away together on Syrax and eating cake forever, they both jumped up and did it and are having a sweet happy ending and Viserys died alone (as he should have) and idc about the throne. After Rhaenyra kissed Mysaria I think it should be obvious that we aren't being queerbaited and that the relationship at the heart of the show is more than BFF-turned-enemy. Despite everything they keep dreaming of their love being powerful enough to create peace. Rhaenicent is canon and if it isn't then I will eat my hat and also disavow all ASoIaF adaptations and ignore everything relating to it again for at least a decade. Maybe GRRM will finish WoW by 2034 and then I'll come back to it

The lack of “negative” qualities (hatred, violence,ambition etc) in Alicent and especially Rhaenyra in this show feels so misogynistic in the writing. It’s giving men= bad (have all the agency) and women=victim because they are just sooo good hearted. The gender essentialism is getting stronger as they deleted Maelor for the Jaehaera-Rhaenyra parallel as well. I think the sept reunion should’ve been cut entirely, the show is acting like Nyra kinda forgot to hate ALL of the greens because they made her lose both Visenya and Lucerys. Also Rhaenys shouldn’t have run over a bunch of civilians if she cares about ppl losing their lives in war. Some logic mistakes are making me have GoT pstd unforgivable
