This is very similar to Raag Revati in Carnatic music. A composition that comes to mind is "naanati Baduku naatakamu" , a kriti by Annamacharya, sung by M.S Subbalakshmi.

Hi, This raga was composed by Late Pandit Ravi Shankarji, our beloved Guruji. Raga Bairagi, created in 1949, is a morning raga. Thanking you, Ravi Shankar Institute for Music and Performing Arts 7, Chanakya Puri New Delhi.

Are you sure! Raag (I am not saying Raga) BAIRAGI was created in 1949?

Many a Hindustani musicians refute that Pt. Ravishankar invented it. They also agree that it is based on Raag Revati which existed much before Pt.Ravishankar was born. No offence meant. Many a compositions of Shiva are on this raag.

ms karmakar. it is untrue panditji created this raga... this has been in existence since time immemorial..dagars have been singing it for generations..amir khan used to sing it.. many more gharanas are singing it...who have nothing to do with maihar gharana...

No Offence madam. But raga Bairagi was not created by Pt.Ravi Shankar ji.It has been there since ages & I do have recordings of many great legends before panditji. So its untrue that he has created this raga.

This raag was taken from Carnatic like hamsadvani and charukeshi. This is raag revati. Biragi bhairav is a Hindustani raag. Ravi Shankar Ji did not create this raag at all.

the Dagar brothers were great -and this again is a great rendition of a great raga. The major problem however - with this rendition and with the Dagar bros in general - is that their alaaps were way too long. Instead of using the alaap to introduce the raag and then move on to the main themes - they spend way too time belaboring the point. By about min 12 in - even the most ardent fan is bored. But 30 mins of alaap is just ridiculous!!

Fugdus - That is traditional dhrupad style alaap. It is just intrinsic to this form of singing. There is no notion of a main theme in any raga. Proper treatment of the various swars with right swarsthan evokes the rasa of the raga.

while I agree that this is "traditional" I don't necessarily agree that because it's traditional it's the most optimal way of doing things. if humans did not break tradition we'd still be apes swinging from trees ...

Tradition, which descends from a spiritual influence, is not to be mistaken for habit... These are two very different things, and a genuine tradition always brings an ascendent movement - it is a living and actualizing movement. Nothing to do with conformist conservatism.

fugdus couldn't agree less. I could listen to a 3 hour Alaap. It's perfect for Naad Yoga which could be said to be the essence of Dhrupad. Respectfully yours

Thanks Darren, my words exactly. Have perfect tanpuras drenched in raga-svaroop, singing rich with nuance and expressive intonation - it's a kind of magic! Things go to hasty all the time, you have to slow down every now and then. A properly built-up alaap with jor & jhala offers enough scope for livelyness as well, and then at least on compostion to get things really moving. What more do you need?
