When I started growing flowers, I was given 2 dahlias. A red one and a white one. They were beautiful. I was told to dig them up and store them in fall, I’m in zone 5b. I threw them in a 5 gal bucket and left them till spring. They were perfect in spring! I have had them over 20 years and that is how they are stored. Newer varieties can not survive that kind of treatment!

Thank you so much for your video, and sharing your knowledge and experience. Fantastic talk👏👏With gratitude and joy is all received. 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 I am growing more dahlias now, in my second year of gardening. And the tubers I kept from last autumn, I washed them with spray, dried them overnight near fireplace, and some stored at around 9-15C temperature, very low humidity, in dry saw dust, inside my house. I did all this, because I was so afraid they will catch the fungus and rot if I left them in shed, where is cooler and damper (humidity in UK probably higher, paper sacks get mildly damp if left in shed), and the mice would have got them. Tubers shrivelled a little, but not subtantially. I was thinking to moist them with spray a little, or not? I just wonder what is your advice? Now I am concerned them being too dry🙏🏻 🙏🏻 🙏🏻 Cheers, and thanks again for all your contribution. Greetings from UK

I lost 900 dollars worth of dahlia😢 It was very sad for me and a loss for a small timer farmer. I learned very quickly it was how I stored them and unfortunately it was how warm they got in this big round cardboard container and unfortunately the metal on the bottom and top like a tuna can had heated my tubers. I was so disappointed and very busy so I never got into them that growing season. I however did handle the situation when I saw one growing out. Surprisingly the few bulbs survived were the powder puff dahlia which, has the upright tall wave to the sky. Thank you Coseytown on such wonderful information on storing, picking, and caring for them properly. I am on board on your website and can’t wait to order💕 Thank you Nicole for sharing these wonderful connections and as always I learn so much from you and your a doll❤

I would look for the out-of-print book "The Encyclopedia of Dahlias" by Bill McClaren. He hybridized the Alpen dahlias and lived in Montana. The back half of the book is very informational. Even though he doesn't specifically address growing in his climate he writes with that experience in mind.
