Hi Lindsay, Im really glad you enjoyed it. The dahlia was an odd one, ink with top colour isnt a technique I use very often, but it shows up a lot better on film than pencil! Thanks so mcuh for your kind comment.

Ah Maritza, it's just a matter of practice! If you find a way to spend a few hours a week working on botanical illustrations then youll be amazed by how fast you get really, really good. Its all totally achievable, it's just making the time to practise that's the hard bit! Good lcuk with it, and thanks for the comment. x

Lizzie, if you are monitoring this older post, not sure what my KZitem name will pop up as, but I am the Liz Kramer on the brief chat we had with Alexandra Sherman regarding paper on Instagram. I watched many of your videos some time ago, and have been revisiting them. I love your enthusiasm! I am still trying to find my method. I've watched hours of Anna Mason, Billy Showell, and now what I can find of you and your painting style. I love the idea of combining darks first with washes later. That seems to be very specific to you. I LOVE your sketchbooks. I sometimes think the unfinished paintings or paintings with graphite are the most beautiful. It's so "organic" and you get to see the artist in their process, which I just so appreciate. I'll need to find your books :-). Anyway, well done, and can't wait to see much more from you, on KZitem and on Instagram!!

Hello Liz! Great timing, I'm normally rubbish at checking youtube messages, but there's been a flutter of activity over the last week so I've been checking in. Thank you SO much for such fab comments. I know, the dark to light does seem to be my way, I do teaching sometimes and that's how I teach; the number of apologies and caveats I have to give out! I'm sure proper botanical illustrators are horrified, but it seems to work for me. Thanks for the comments about my sketchbooks, Id spend my life doing them and nothing else if I could, they fill me with joy and delight. And you're right, I love other peoples sketchbooks too, there's an immediacy to them and a freshness that often doesn't translate into finished work (this is certainly true for some of my work). I do teaching workshops sometimes, not sure where you're based, there's a couple at Cambridge University Botanic Gardens and some near here in Hay on wye; if you came along I could demo the darks-first technique and you could grill me ti try and find a good approach! Thanks for the comment, it's people like you who keep me doing these videos, it's lvoely to know they dont just sink into a cyber-void, so THANKYOU!

Thank you for the great video. Especially that you drew with a permanent black pen so we can see the drawing. But also the watercolor painting is insightful for me. I‘ve been doing different tutorials on KZitem to improve my watercolor painting skills and I find I am fascinated the most by realistic botanical painting like yours.

Thanks for the comment. Im glad it was useful. Theres a lot of really good botanical illustrators who share films for free, and you may be interested in joining the "Botanical Art for Beginners" facebook page, if you're interested in taking your watercolour in a botanical direction? Thanks for the comment, and yeah, using the pen worked. A whole lot more visible than pencil! X

An excellent video Lizzie! I would love to get a tutorial on how to improve my pen and line skills - you make it look so easy!

Oooh, pen and line techniques. That might be a fin one to do a video on. There are fun little excersizes you can do, drawing with the "wrong" hand, copying something upside down, not looking at the page as you draw etc., all of these help free you up a bit. Then it's all down to practise, I guess. Easy for em to say, I have the luxury of being able to practise all day every day, for most people carving out a chunk of time to draw or paint is a luxury that has to be fought for!

Hi Geraldine, thanks for the positive comment! I will, I love doing them (although worry about repeating myself, and wonder how you lot can bear to hear me chattering on!) although there's always a bit of technology and camera play to wrestle with. The painting and talking is the easiest bit! That's fab that you like my style, thank you.

Now I’m confused....I thought you were supposed to start with the lights with WC?? You are lucky to have such a beautiful garden to visit. My mother is a gardener, most of my earliest memories include flowers of some type, of being with her while she works in the garden...and I have dozens of photos of her flowers. Finally going to put them to use.

A lot of artists like to start with the lights and then build up the darks when working with watercolor. You can easily take things darker, but its much harder to re-gain light values. Other artists however like to start with the darks to define the darkest areas of their paintings - this helps them get the correct value for the lights without the artwork looking "washed out". It comes down to personal preference and skill/experience.

Hi BaronBrownB. I gave the sketch to Layla at Majestic bus for being nice enough to put up with me in her garden for a couple of hours! However, I've got a more detailed dahlia illustration (different cultivar though) hanging around which is going to be used in "The Garden Forager" ( by Adele Nozedar pub March 2015). Here's a link to it: www.pinterest.com/pin/529595237402299277/. If ever you fancy buying or commissioning artwork just let me know; I don't give it all to Layla! Thanks for your comment, and glad you liked the film. Yours Lizzie www.lizzieharper.co.uk

Hi everyone. Re-posted this as first time round the narration sounded like I was underwater in a thick sleeping bag. Hope this one's a bit easier to hear....
