One of my favorite quotes from The Compound Effect "When most people set out to achieve new goals, they ask 'Okay, I have my goal; now what do I need to do to get it?' It's not a bad question, but it's not the first question that needs to be addressed either. The question we should be asking ourselves is: 'Who do I need to become?' You probably know some people who seem to do all the right things, but still don't produce the results they want, right? Why not? One thing Jim Rohn taught me is: 'If you want to have more, you have to become more. Success is not something you pursue. What you pursue will elude you; it can be like trying to chase butterflies. Success is something you attract by the person you become."

I kinda started understanding this principle, when I first started learning about investing, like index or mutual funds all are great ideas, not because you put your money in there and not because you get that growth each year, but because everything that you put in the previous year is going to help whatever you put in this year to make even more money and same goes for skills, even if you learn like programming or lose weight or whatever it is, it might not be as important or as effective as you'd like it to be, but when you decide to move on to learning the next skill, the skills that you've learnt before will help you excel in the new one as well.

Thank you for this video, it helped me a lot on understanding better this way to achieve results.

taariqq yes. 1. You learn to program first 2. You get a job or freelance for a while to sharpen those skills 3. You build a programs in your off time and sell their use to the public. 4. When one finally hits enough popularity you become rich!
@CobraAquinas
5 жыл бұрын
This will most likely not happen. I'm an optimist, but a serious one. Delusions help no one. You may become 10% better at programming each day for a few months but once you reach proficiency you're looking at 1 percent better every year. In terms of skill. As far as a business goes I wasn't speaking of that but yes you can get an infinite multiple on your investment. However, can and will are entirely different questions. Just remember there is no easy route to anything, and anyone who says there is, is either selling you nonsense or has been sold nonsense themselves and has a burning need for their lie to be true. If you are interested in programming. I'd advise you to pursue it immediately, don't be distracted by the "next" idea practical application dominates theory. Dominates it.

In fact, even you are aware of the compound effect, it merely impossible for most people to succeed. In real life, sharping a skill and make the right decision is supposed to be done on a daily basis, and you cannot see the difference in half a year if not two or three years. Most people cannot wait that long. Besides, the environment changes consistently. The right decision today could be a wrong decision from tomorrow.

The idea of compound growth is great. However, the hard part is measuring growth, esp. with many things in life that are more qualitative (e.g. skills and relationships). Also, growing constantly at a positive % in something is very difficult and it depends on what one is trying to grow in, but one thing that is common among anything that is being improved is that improvement and its growth starts diminishing and it becomes very difficult to grow more due to limited resources.
@down-the-rabbit-hole

I know my reply is 5 years later, lol, but my thoughts are, almost everything can be compounded and have a positive affect. The funny thing is, I've been using this to make huge changes in my life over the last 2 years without even knowing about this book. This can be used in just about everything, from spiritual development, to exercise, to learning new skills to be more marketable for a job. This applies to pretty much anything. I mean even if it's a skill you need to learn over the next 2 months, you can break it down in steps. As far as the growth starting to diminish, you would have to give me example of that. The only one that I can think of is building muscle. If this doesn't work for someone, it's because they are applying it incorrectly.

Good example for the compound principle ! If the core value is not love or personal content with life, then life is wasted :-) Nobody at the end of their life tells that they wish that they made more money or worked more, instead of sharing happy moments and being content ! For the money, create something that creates additional or better value to others and they will pay you back if you ask for it. That value creation can be personal and totally in line with personal preferences in style or activity type.

Tan Junjie think of it as a sort of trailer to see if you would like the broad idea of the book. If you like it or are interested in it, then you can buy the book. Otherwise why waste time in reading it when you have thousands of other books which are worth reading? This should serve as a filter and/or summary post reading. The sad reality is a lot of productivity books take what can be said in two pages into two hundred.

Love the explainer video. Great concepts. The principles discussed are solid. It reminds me of what the great Mr. Robbins teaches: 'The Science of achievement and the art of fulfillment'. There is a science to getting things, possessions, more money, etc. And it's all too easy to fall into the thinking that achieving more brings lasting happiness. But it's actually in fulfillment where true happiness is found. I think fulfillment can be summed up with one word: Perception. The way you perceive a situation determines the chemistry your brain/body will experience. I like this subject :)

I went the second route. That way I get a lot of free time to be with my family and friends. I have time for my hobbies and gaming. I even make enough to invest early on. Stress free and no worries.
