Today's piece is based off a neat little pizzicato pattern, where the four players must combine to produce a 3:2 polyrhythm. Each part on its own is very simple, but when put together, an engaging pattern emerges.
The same principle applies to the melody. Instead of being patterned, this melody is flowing and turbulent, lyrical despite being pizzicato, weaving through time as it weaves through the players. I've done this concept a few times now in these studies, and even though it's quite difficult to perform, I still find it fascinating due to its emphasis on co-operation and trust between the players. It also spreads the theme through space in a way a soloist could not achieve.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!
