Today's piece is a small exploration into the 5:4 polyrhythm. I use it on two different scales; 5:4 within each measure, and 5:4 across each pair of measures. Thus, they make a combined 10:8:5:4 polyrhythm.
Harmonically, I decided to focus on major thirds, since that interval also follows a 5:4 ratio when tuned justly (of course, a standard vibraphone is tuned in 12EDO, so it won't have any justly tuned intervals besides the octave, but oh well). From there, I simply focused on the possible major thirds in each tonal space I was in, often using the b7 and #4 for some more unique major thirds, while also giving the piece an "acoustic scale" kind of sound.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!
