Trombone quartet today, a very fun and expressive ensemble. To my own surprise, I haven't written for just trombones since day 3 of this project. To that point though, there are still many established ensembles I have yet to write for in this series. Much like yesterday's piece, this study ended up far longer than I had originally planned.
Before I started writing, I decided I wanted to write something unique to the trombone for this piece. There are several options, such as its innate ability for glissandi and microtones, but I was drawn to its dynamic range instead. The trombone is generally considered to have the loudest potential sound of the standard orchestral instruments, yet it also has a profound timbre when played quietly. So, I began this study as an exploration of dynamic variety.
While subito dynamic changes are a compelling sound, I found that gradual changes also work well for the trombone, since it can just keep getting louder/softer beyond what you may expect. Beyond these dramatic swells and fades, this study uses a repeating "echo" motif, where several parts will repeat staccato notes after the melody note. In my mind, it works like a fancy delay effect where the pitches are free to change.
As always, these pieces are welcome for anyone and everyone to play! All I ask is that you share it with me, because I'd love to hear it done by live players!
