Lovely regal looking cars, built to cruise at speeds where most contemporary vehicles of similar capacity were flat-out. In the mid-60s, rode in a '57 model that had only 26000 miles on the clock. I remember its being very smooth and not at all rattly mechanically. The car in the vid is a treasure and worth the effort that has gone into it. Col, NZ.

Ho ho ho. That is a little beauty. Listening to it run, I would say it has a preselector gearbox.

they're a lovely sounding car, great american-sounding 6 cylinder and that nice fluid flywheel whine. Maybe the camera was picking up the tappets, maybe slight adjustment?`

This car is very noisy. Sounds very much like in need of tappets timing and mixture. Should tickover at about 400 revs and be silent. Easy to do tappets when on tickover, and ,will make a big difference. Have owned several of these in the past fifty years. Mel Cox.

Is she leaving her calling card on the floor like most tin from Britannia does? Looks like you’ve got a good sized leak there where the car is parking. Nice old girl.

I really didn't realize how badly damaged and stunted the British automobile industry was by WWII. This 1956 car looks straight out of 1935. It was into the 70's that British cars started to look modern. Compare this car to a 56 Ford, Chevrolet or Oldsmobile, really startling. Even the most expensive Rolls, Bentley or Daimler of this era looks like a pre-war car. The interior of this car, especially the dashboard, steering wheel and gear selector, looks early 1930's. It really demonstrates how expensive and hard it is to re-tool and restyle automobiles.

Compared with American designs yes, but compare this with a British pre-war car and it is very different, integrated wings and much rounder and less upright than pre-war Daimler DB18, Wolseleys etc. and standard postwar RRs and Bentleys, and so much drier than a Conquest era chariot as well. The British love of shiny wooden fascias has never really gone away though.

Post-war American cars might have started to look different relatively quickly, but they were designs out of the Arc. For example, just when did the Americans give up on leaf springs?

This was Daimler's most successful car. Over 9,000 units made, which is huge when compared to their other models. This model was spot on for what the British buyer of the early 1950s wanted. Look at Rolls Royces of the era and they look similar.
