You're calling the brakes - drag, and the spool tension - brakes. Drag is the pointed star on the handle. Spool tension is for lure weight variance, should always allow the lure to drop slowly. Brakes should be set at lowest allowable without backlashes = velocity/inertia of lure (8-12 is fine); more brake against wind, less brake going with wind. Drag is set for lure type, tighter for setting worm hooks and pulling fish away from cover (or use your thumb on the reel), looser for treble hooks and letting a fish run.

I’m new to baitcasters and my cast literally go like 20ft out. My breaks are set it like 6 and I move the tension knob until my bait slowly goes down. Still only cast like 15 to 20 ft, and I birdnest more than half of the time. Really frustrating to master

Whats the deal with all these zero adjust spool reels? Daiwa has gone off the deep end for this option. If you can call it that!

It is, but there’s also a really low groan that comes from the internals - my camera mic just couldn’t seem to capture it

@@mattbassninja does it make the groan with all lures? My Abu Garcia groans when I reel high resistance baits like spinnerbaits.

It’s definitely tough starting out but stick with it! I will say - I have had awful experiences with lower end baitcasters and definitely think it’s worth it to get a nicer one even when you’re learning. Thanks for watching!

Adjust the tension spool knob until the spool is barely making a noise (having play). Then okay with the brakes start at 8 then go lower. Make sure your stopping the line with your thumb before it hits the water.

Is j braid or any other type of line better for casting distance with that reel cuz I recently got one and throw 20 or less any rod recommendations or line

Make sure you’ve got enough line on your spool, otherwise, depending on the rod you’re pairing it with, the baits you’re selecting may not carry enough weight/or your adjustments in the reel are too tight, to allow it to cast farther.
