I met Dale in NY in the summer of 1994 as a 9 yr old fan, got his autograph and shook his hand. In 2019, after moving to Florida, I worked the Daytona 500 as credentialed media for a regional motorsports publication based out of the Northeast and shook his son's hand. Talk about full circle. I made my way close to the turn 3 area, said a prayer, shed a tear, then went and did my job. To this point in my life, that's one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. And make no mistake, that was something I HAD to do...

I remember reading the official report when it was released and I believe one of the biggest factors in his death was the hit from Schrader's car on his right door because it jostled his body to the right (as noted in this video) and because the belt failed, his body was traveling to the right when it made head on contact with the wall. It was a perfect storm of events that lead to his death. Had just one of those things not happened, he'd have likely been fine.

Just like so many other disasters. As the intro for Seismic Seconds, as well as its successor, Seconds From Disaster, said, “Disasters don’t just happen.” There’s a chain of critical events that are locked together in time that lead to them. Whether it’s a fatal racing accident, a natural disaster, an aviation accident, an industrial accident, etc., they’re all caused by a perfect storm of events, and if one of them were different, the outcome would also be different.

Yeah it was revealed that Dale had an issue with his seat belts being put on correctly. Often, according to the pit crew and NASCAR, he left his seat belts twisted at times when he got in the car and was warned about the possibility of the impact and the twisted belt being cut by the adjuster. The Hans device would not have saved him in this situation, but The Hans device becoming mandatory has saved multiple drivers from head injuries. This was also during a transition from half facial helmets to full facial helmets that drivers use today. Dale never liked the full facial and he absolutely hated the Hans device. Now on super speedways, people said that Dale can see the air and that what made him so good on tracks like Daytona and Talladega. He said later that it was the pressure from the air difference in his car that allowed him to feel exactly where the other cars are at and what the wind is doing in front of him and he took advantage of the slipstream to be able to overtake the other vehicles. I seen him more than once take off from 30 plus positions back and end up in the lead on these two tracks during restrictor plate racing and end up in the lead within two laps. Never liked his style of aggressive driving in wrecking other cars to win the race, but what he got in trouble, like Jimmy Johnson, he had about an 85% chance of steering the car out of trouble and have a great finish. I remember one time that he actually rolled the car, got out of it, looked around at the damage and got back into his car to finish the race...

If you’ve seen the pictures from the inside of the car, there’s no doubt that impact on the steering wheel pushed his jaw right threw the back of his head. Basilar skull fracture. Dale was one of the dirtiest racers in NASCAR. He probably put more drivers into the wall than any other driver in NASCAR history. He also was ALWAYS breaking safety rules, and never kept his belts tight. I was watching the race, and when they announced he was dead I said "He thrived trading paint, and he died the same way. Poetry"

@@codymoe4986 Yes, and it was noteworthy at the time, because the entire NASCAR industry was mourning his loss as if he were a war hero. I don't think there was ANY driver on the circuit at the time who drove dirtier than Dale. He profited from throwing other drivers into the wall or executing a PIT maneuver at 150mph. His legacy is the rules TODAY that would have removed him from the sport if he were driving now

@@brianjennings5610 I don't hate him. Just observing his rep was to dominate his space on the track, and he died when he missed a body check. He had been doing it his entire career, and it caught up to him. You can fantasize all you want about the guy, but he died doing what made him famous, putting cars into the wall. If he had retired, he would have made money playing the bully in ads, cuz that was his reputation. Instead of pretending it wasn't his thing, you should be praising him for living his life as he pleased

Death is always most beautiful to those that are dead.... I wonder if his actual family and friends, would rather have him back, or are simply grateful he "died doing something he loved"? If you're going to romanticize something, be sure you are actually intimate with it first....
