Jim Davis left his mark during the first three years he was on "Dallas". No one can deny that. Strong willed, smart, protective, stubborn and proud, Jock Ewing was THE patriarch of the show. His death left a void that was never completely filled. To his credit, Howard Keel was a solid choice to step into the show as the older male figure to anchor the series. Clayton Farlow was similar to Jock in a number of ways but was more even tempered and measured when dealing with others. It's easy to see why Miss Ellie was drawn to him. Both her husbands were hard working, successful men who commanded the respect of those around them.

@@gregwatson8219 - Ben Cartwright was a widowed man (three times over) during the run of "Bonanza". He remained single throughout the shows fourteen years on the air. Both the men she married were successful, strong, smart men who commanded the respect of those around them. In this regard all three men have similar attributes. Then Jock came along with his enormous financial wealth and he saved Southfork from getting auctioned off. Since Jock's hard-earned money saved the ranch, to a major extent that alone caused him to become the new owner of Southfork. That was Jock's hard-earned money that maintained & kept Southfork upgraded, and he raised his family at Southfork throughout the 45 years he lived there. Yet, I thought it was right, to move Jock's portrait, to Ewing Oil offices. Comparing Jock, to Clayton and vice versa, wasn't fair to either man. Jock was gone and Clayton rightly married Miss Ellie, because they loved each other. Fraternal twin likeness or not, Clayton was his own man.

Donna Reed was pretty bland as Miss Ellie at first but she improved with each appearance. Had she had time to grow in the role and make it her own I think the fans would have eventually embraced her version.

Larry Hagman cleverly orchestrated this mini-storyline with the intent of further eroding Donna Reed’s standing among Dallas viewers. He was not a supporter of Ms. Reed fulfilling the role of Ms. Ellie, and he was laying the groundwork for the return of Barbara Bel Geddes. Mr. Hagman shared certain tactical qualities with the legendary character he created and so brilliantly portrayed.

Jim Davis and Donna Reed definitely knew each other Jim Davis guest starred on The Donna Reed show in 1962. He played an old buddy of Donna's husband Donna's character didn't care for Jim Davis' character very much as he was a bit of a male chauvinist. Jim Davis guest starred on The Lucy Show he played a casino owner when Lucy ( Lucille Ball) and Vivian Vance visited Las Vegas.

I remember watching this episode as a kid. Miss Ellie and Bobby were right. However, it would have been better if Miss Ellie (Barbara Bel Geddes) would have been the one to take Jocks portrait down. This was a great and emotional scene. I do have empathy for JR here but, we do have to move on with life at some point.

Southfork was more than just the ranch. It was land. Miss Ellie should have built a second ranch on the land. Called it farlow ranch .. that way Clayton had his own home and Ellie had 2 ranch's on southfork
Donna reed had no right to take that picture down. Barbara bel geddes would never have let the script writers do that.
