Actually if the real Jock had turned up in season 10, the show would have lasted longer in the top 10. 1st half of season 10 was interesting only because of this story line. It was also the season that demised Dallas.

Frankly, they needed Patrick Duffy, but they should have avoided killing Bobby off previously. I think they should have had him “disappear” while exploring an offshore rig, or some Canadian oil field. I do think that the 80’s prime time soaps all discovered the danger of doing the things that are unbelievable by the audience.

They could have said Bobby inherited an oil company in Europe following that both Pam and Jenna turn him down and have Bobby simply leave Dallas heartbroken where they can say Pam took Christopher to visit him off camera leaving the door open for him to return

Another idea rolling in my mind. Is there any way to merge the 85-86 and 86-87 seasons together with clever editing. I think a lot is lost that Sue Ellen doesn’t have her downfall and redemption arc. I always felt like a combination of her downfall and then her plot to get back at JR would have been cool. I hated 1986-87 April Stevens. She really doesn’t become a likable character until the 1988-89 season. She was basically invented to give Jack Ewing a foil after Bobby’s death was a dream. I hated the breakup of Ray and Donna - and basically making Jenna pregnant to give her character a story arc with Ray. I loved the Calhoun storyline over the Angelica Nero one … but it would have been interesting to have had the two storylines intertwined. Even have Calhoun be Angelica’s mercenary. It be an interesting edit. But I would never have the time to do it.

Do you think this Dallas could have gone on for five more years? In a way, JR Ewing was Dallas as much as the ensemble cast was Dallas. Bobby returning eventually destroyed the ensemble cast that had been built, but would Dallas have survived in 1986 without Larry Hagman as JR? I’m not saying Hagman would have left, but it would have been interesting how long Dallas would have lasted without the Dream reboot.

One question we’ll never know the answer to is: did Duffy’s return slow the decline of the show? Because ratings dropped rapidly between 1985 and ‘86 before his return.

If the new season continued from that point, I predict the following would have happened... Cliff, devastated over Jamie's death begins a new vendetta against JR! Sue Ellen is left tepmporarily paralised - nearly driving her to drink again! After rehabilitation. she finds out JR and Mandy have rekindled their affair, and starts to become the scheming Sue Ellen we came to love. Clayton, Ray and JR struggle to prove that Ben Shrivers is not Jock Ewing Donna, Ray and Tony move into their new house. Tony worries that Donna and Ray won't want him anymore when Donna becomes preganant again. Eventually Donna has a baby girl. Mark's past comes back to haunt him, and he must tell Pam what he did in college.

If the producers of Dallas were going to bring back Jock Ewing there was one man and one man alone at that time who could realistically had pulled it off: Lorne Greene Unfortunately he was in poor health and died a year later I suppose Michael Landon could have done it but he didn't have the right build and he was too busy with Highway To Heaven The writing for Dallas was becoming very bad at that time 1). A whole season as a dream - EPIC FAIL 2). JR Ewing marrying a hillbilly - EPIC FAIL 3). JR committing himself to a sanitarium to get some voting rights. This would have been ok if Sue Ellen would have been the one to leave him there - FAIL Those are just a few examples
