Superb! My choir had the privilege to sing Brahms' Requiem with her several years ago in Winchester Cathedral. She's a lovely woman and definitely no demanding diva. She stood quietly at one side, dressed casually in trousers shirt and jacket (not diamonds and furs), listening to us rehearsing. She sang with us for an hour or so for sound checks and to give us a chance to adjust and get used to her and then signed autographs after the rehearsal (I treasure my signed score!). Then she gave a fantastic performance in the evening and carried us along with her. It was a stupendous and unforgettable experience for a non-professional choir like ours!

I think this video explains Kiri Te Kanawa's fame, especially in this repertoire. The endless and easy flow of a homogeneously warm and sweet sound, the even vibrato, the flawlessly supported and floating legato line are nothing short of sensational. (I find it interesting how she takes the passaggio notes - around E and F in the 2nd octave - so high that they become slightly sharp, although still maintaining the overall pleasantness of her rendition. Was she afraid of singing flat in the passaggio region?) Her beautifully relaxed face shows the poise of a consummate vocalist, and her typical, slight furrows at the inner edges of the eyebrows indicate exactly where she is placing the sound... ;-) I have just one - not even criticism, but rather a question: Isn't it maybe too flawless, too superior? The Countess is, after all, the same character as the vivid Rosina in the Barber of Seville, just a few (not many!) years older - and here, in the Marriage of Figaro she is unhappy, almost helpless, and certainly not 'poised'. We all know that Mozart has written some of his most demanding phrases for the Countess (undecorated, cruelly 'open' lines, "nowhere to hide", as Margaret Price would say), and that the role requires, first of all, a superior vocalist to do it justice. But shouldn't it also transport - through and beyond the perfection of the singing - the helplessness, restlessness, the despair and vulnerability of the character? Here, most of the time I hear and see a beautiful and melancholically placid lady in full possession of her composure and restraint...

Te Kanawa is at her most amazing shape here! The voice is very luscious and delicate, and she has absolute control. But, even so, nothing here sounds mechanical. Her Mozartean taste is ideal, as well as her subtle but attentive phrasing. Now as for the greatest Contessas, people always forget Della Casa, who's just as great as Schwarzkopf and Te Kanawa and perhaps even more charming. Fleming is also one of the best.
