I'm gay and I've been a fan of both In Living Color and Dave Chappelle for many years. The "Men on _____" skits in Living Color, in which they play two outrageously queeny and prissy gay men, was effing hilarious. Did they perpetuate stereotypes of gay men? Yes, but ... and here's the important part ... IT WAS DAMN FUNNY! I watched Dave Chappelle's "The Closer" prepared to not like Dave anymore, but I laughed my ass off and he made some very valid and poignant statements near the end. Dave is NOT the enemy here. At all. I found it surprising that so many people wanting to cancel Dave never even watched The Closer! I just ask that people please don't think this is the entire LGBT community trying to cancel Dave or other comedians. There are people in the LGBT community like me who still like Dave and have a sense of humor about ourselves and don't get offended over a bunch of jokes, especially if they're funny. I think the issue is that those critics didn't actually watch the special. Instead, someone online said "Dave said this" and they pull it completely out of context without his cadence or rhythm, and they take that as all they need to know and get super offended by it. Then someone else sees them say it, take it as fact, gets super offended, and repeats it. For example, someone made a comment that "Dave didn't actually know Daphne, he didn't even know she had a kid!" Clearly this person didn't watch it, since Dave clearly talked about Daphne's daughter and set up a trust for her! If they'd watched, they'd know that. But instead they read someone else's take, and that's it. Which is also something Dave talked about! Which is how you know absolutely that they didn't watch it!

if you don't like something your watching, like the late George Carlin once said, change the channel. That simple. The KKK once had a rally back around early 2000s, I was meeting a old friend for lunch when she pointed it out. At the time no one was even paying attention to their BS, I told her why would I give them the attention they are seeking and we went on to have our lunch. On the way back a bus load of protestors who opposed them had shown up, then the media.....guess what, the Klan won that day because they got the attention and media opportunity they were after. I just shook my head and walked on. Before the 2nd group showed up, no media, no one gave a sh%#. This is no different, Dave was going to get his applause, but the sensitive group that attacked only brought greater attention to his special. kinda funny really.

Unable to be cancelled. They could both be cancelled fast and swiftly if they were to do 1 very simple thing..... appear to be right wing or even loosely associated with the right. Look at the once darling of the far left and the face of the Metoo movement, Rose Mcgowan. She publicly supported a black man for CA governor in the recall, normally that would be great for her but this time that black man was a Republican and she was shunned by the elite left in entertainment. Then she started calling out the Democrat party and went on fox news a couple times.... not only has she been cancelled but she is now labeled a racist, sexist piece of trash. She will NEVER work in Hollywood again, be invited to any entertainment venue again and will not be allowed to have any role whatsoever in the movement she basically single-handedly started. All of the activist groups and LLCs she was central in founding have now completely erased her name, image and likeness from all of their digital fingerprint, they have essentially erased all the good she did and was applauded for just a year ago. The cancel culture mob is very good at what they do, if they truly want them cancelled... They will be. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when. It will take longer than say, someone like Jon Gruden but if they want you, they'll get you.

If you don't see the difference, you shouldn't be commenting on the matter. The LGTBQIA+ community does not have the kind of history of punching down that the Black community does, and they certainly haven't been punching down at the same time that they were whining about being disadvantaged. I don't have an inherent problem with making those sorts of jokes, but it is in extremely poor taste for somebody in a community that disproportionately voted in favor of Prop 8 in California to be making these sorts of jokes. At bare minimum, it just encourages that kind of bigoted nonsense. And that's a detail that supporters are ignoring. Things have a context, and in this case the jokes should have been left to people who weren't rich, powerful and part of a community that has such issues.

We need to be careful using the phrase "freedom of speech". This controversy is not a First Amendment issue. That only applies where the government, not private citizens or entities, are involved. This is why your boss, a private citizen, or his business, a private entity, can censor your speech by forbidding profanity or cursing at the workplace, dictate what you can or cannot wear, and even monitor your email and record your calls without your permission. Freedom of speech only applies where the government is trying to censor the speech of its citizens. This is why Trump could do nothing to Twitter, Facebook, etc. when they censored his speech. Social media, obviously owned and used by private citizens, does not invoke First Amendment protections when its citizens going at each other. T his doesn't mean you'll can say whatever your want whenever your want to There are other legal protections applicable in such cases. Eg, you can't just yell "Fire!!" for no reason at the movies. There are also libel or defamation laws, the prohibition against inflammatory or language used to incite civil unrest, etc etc, but the First Amendment is not involved.
