Dan's Pilot Log for 8/19/2023 - "The Sound and the Furricane"* - highlights of the 2023 Wings Over Camarillo Air Show. Wow, what a weekend - an air show - Wings Over Camarillo - and then an AIR SHOW - Hurricane Hilary! (Well, more of a tropical depression by the time it reached us, but it brought as much as seven inches of rain to some parts of Southern California and four inches to Camarillo, which is incredible.)
This big air show pretty much happened right in front of my hangar, so I had to be there to film it. (And the airport closes for the show, so I wasn’t flying anywhere anyway.) It's a six hour show but I somehow squeezed it down to five minutes of most of the sights and mind- and eardrum-blowing sounds.
The planes and aerobatics were incredible, but the most amazing and earsplitting of them all was the FA-18F Rhino Super Hornet. Those low-elevation, high-speed passes - you can see it coming, but you hardly hear it until it passes - and then the sound is painful! But most impressive is how agile the plane is - some things it does just don’t look possible. You'll see what I mean.
