I just met this man today. Walked into my store, saw my name badge, got him talking about his German and Ukranian family history. Gave me his business card, and a lifesaver mint. Very nice guy

I absolutely love Dan's Whetstones. I've always wanted to go see the operation, as I pass it on my way to Burl's Smokehouse and Hot Springs. Our place is just east of Mena and the creek is full of small novaculite, quartz, slate, and chert that the wife ends up bringing back in buckets after our trips. I own several stones from Dan's and buy them as presents. Arkansas stone just has a very special feel and connection, just like the state. My people came from there and I'll be buried there one day. I'll rest right inside that beautiful heirloom rock. Make no mistake, Dan's is the finest of all stones over there east of the Caddos and Winding Stairs.

Of all the stones I used with knives, woodworking tools, yard and garden equipment, etc ... the arkansas stone was the hardest for me to get my brain around. Between all the various grades of stone and the hype and baloney from 100+ years of various companies marketing this stuff I was plain old confused! I have learned one thing, they do wear and will dish over time so it is best to keep that in the back of ones mind.

They have great traditional Arkansas stones. I have several 8-12" bench stones by them and they are all superb quality. If I had any complaint(poor choice, how about comment), it'd be the "soft" Arkansas benches I have by them are way harder than other dealers soft stones. I know there is overlap in grading, theirs must be on the upper upper end, into lower "hard ark". Their coarse Washita I have is my favorite general knife stone. These are heirloom quality stones to me.

The best soft stone you could find is sold by Natural Whetstone Co. and it's called hard (800 grit) Arkansas stone. It's quality and feel is as close as it gets to an average Washita. I have three different vintage Washita stones and love them. But Dan's Black and Translucent are some of the best and their stones are really flat.

I wonder if he worked for Dresser Industries? They had a mine in Nevada band made drill mud and stones there.

Can you shave off a translucent or surgical?? I finish with synthetic 12k. Be going backwards? Any help is appreciated! Greg B.

Yes you can,and a properly dressed finish grade Arkansas stone will raise the 12k up a fair bit, also it will make it feel far smoother than the synthetic stone may.

I bought a Preyda translucent Arkansas stone last week (they didn't have Dans translucent) The employee at smokey mountain knifeworks told me that Preyda was the ONLY company that owned a mine with the black and translucent and every other company, including Dan's bought from Preyda and repackaged. I wish I had seen this video before I went

Preyda sources their stones from Dan's. Just the opposite of what you are saying.

Johnmac, do you know which stone is finer, the surgical black or the translucent? I read both ways in different places, I bought one of each and I can't honestly tell which one is finest, thanks.

Shane, it depends upon the Specific Gravity (SG) of the stone. Traditionally, the surgical black is considered to be the finer of the two, however a high SG translucent will technically outperform a lower SG “surgical” black. It all depends on SG.

JohnMac do you know anything about "Black Translucent"? Are they any finer than Black Surgical?
