Great information in this video. I have never seen this done. I have always just started with the shim set from the last assembly put it all together and rum the pattern then did a total disassembly to adjust shims. Wow that looks a lot easier. Thanks for sharing your skills and tips

Best video I’ve seen so far!! I’m rebuilding a 94 yj. I’m replacing the axles and bearings on my Dana 30. Now I’ve been a millwright for almost 40 years. I’ve worked on gas and steam turbine generators. I’ve tons of precision work. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little intimidated lol. We’ll see how it goes lol

Brian, I have been following your previous D30 videos and really appreciate them. I am just past this point in my rebuild and have a question. I am installing my Differential and have created Setup Bearing. I have determined that I need 0.058" shims to create Zero Backlash on the two Diff Side Bearings. The Service manual states that I also need to add another 0.015" shims to create preload. I have just recently rebuilt an AMC 20 where the preload shim thickness was 0.008! Why would these be that different? Both axles using roughly the same size tapered bearings, you would think that the optimal preload would be extremely similar. What preload thickness do you use for a Dana 30 Differential? I assume you cover in your next video, but I am hoping to continue working on mine tomorrow morning. Cheers and thanks for all of your videos! Mike

Every axle is different and bearing preload is critical. Too much and bearings get damaged, too little and the carrier can move. AMC 20 I use .008, dana 30 I use .005" . That depends on exactly how tight the carrier is before adding the last preload shim. You should have to tap in in with a rubber mallet but you shouldn't have to beat it in there real hard. It is kind of a feel thing and you will know by how hard you have to hit it to install in. Shouldn't scuff the bearing cups when installing it.

Just to make sure I understand what was done here….. this measurement represents the distance from the centerline of the axle tube to the sure face of the bearing?
@metalshaperJeep
2 жыл бұрын
It is measured that way, center to bearing, but that is not the master housing dimension, just a measuring point.

The Dana 30 and AMC 20 are two axles I would really like to be able to service. I’m excited to see this through. I’ve always been intimidated by this procedure

I am showing this Dana 30 in a few videos. Same as the one I will be rebuilding for the scrambler project. AMC 20 from the scrambler will be coming soon, with a locker install and one piece axles.

Hello Brian, seems perfect to me get the correct build up accounting for the housing machining errors but I don’t see you taking account for when the gear manufacturer has determined after machining and run-in that the set has an optimal pinion depth that is not equal to the master dimension but is +/- X thou
@metalshaperJeep
2 жыл бұрын
Not exactly sure what you are saying. The setup is perfectly centered on the tooth, not too shallow and not too deep where it would hit the root. The set up won't change when running so not sure why you think the pinion isn't set right. Please explain.
@metalshaperJeep

I think I figured out what you mean. Different pinions are marked + or - and then a number. The old 3.54 gears that came out where +3. If you look at this video again right at 26:01 minutes in the video you will see this is a 0 Pinion. I probably should have mentioned that in the video that + you remove shims, and - you add shims equal to the number on the pinion gear. Since this was a 0 pinion I set it to the master housing dimension. If you were talking about something else let me know. Brian

Great video, thanks. I bought a nice CJ-7 just last week. It has the D30 in front and AMC20 in the rear. I pulled the cover on the 20 to change the lube and found it has 41/15 teeth. 2.73 ratio. Pretty tall gears for a Jeep; I may upgrade to 3.54s. I'm thinking that should be about right for the new 30" tires it has.

Maybe I missed it , you did a total of .073 shims for pinion depth, that's the oil baffle (or whatever they call it) and shims to equal. 073, what about the oil slinger? That would contribute to pinion depth wouldn't it? I'm setting up a jk dana 30 rite now and kinda fighting depth , only tool I don't have is pinion depth tool but it's not a must have , more of a luxury. So do you add slinger to you shims behind race for a total ?
@metalshaperJeep
Жыл бұрын
figure pinion with just shims. the oil slinger is a constant and is added after shims are figured out.
@ellencadoret8145

@@metalshaperJeep good morning, I’m new to this, am I correct in understanding that the oil sling does not come into play for adding shims to get to 3.625.

Thanks to your old videos on Willys axles, I've been able to set up several axles getting a nice pattern using Prussian blue. But recently I came across a Dana 25 that shows no pattern whatsoever, from the tips you gave on the range where the depth shims usually fall in, it should be really close or in the right spot, backlash is .010 I changed the 5.38 gears for 4.88 gears. Any advice on how I could get a pattern to see if it's right? I put some resistance with my hand on the carrier as it spins, but still no pattern. Thank you for sharing another great video!
@metalshaperJeep
2 жыл бұрын
Prussian blue will work but won't show a pattern as good as real gear marking compound. Very odd not to have a pattern on the gears, try some very heavy grease to see if it gives a pattern. Sometimes the prussian blue is so thin it is hard to see.
