Danphe Chari is the love story of a Danphe bird from the hills and a Murali bird from the plains.
A flock of birds find an unusual egg in the forest and watch over it with keen interest until it hatches. The baby Danphe is adopted and raised by this assorted group of parents until he grows into a handsome young bird. Answering his inclination to explore the world, the Danphe flies to the plains of Nepal and meets Murali. They fall in love, get married and are blissfully content with their lives until the entry of the eagle who wants the Murali for himself at any cost. The eagle egged on by the opportunist, the crow, plots to kill the Danphe. This murderous attempt is foiled by Murali and her friends. The Danphe forgives the repentant eagle and the two join their hands in friendship.
What appears to be a simple love story is in fact based on today’s reality of the need for understanding and appreciation between the people of the hills and the plains of Nepal.
This musical drama succeeds in encompassing the issues of the rights and responsibilities of the Nepalis as well as the significant role that can be played by women in peace initiatives.
The final lyrics of the musical drama पहाड मधेश मिलेर बनोस् यो भूमी पवित्र ‘Let the meeting of the hills and plains purify this land,’ leave us all wondering if the composer Gopal Yonjan foresaw today’s political scenario.
