To bad they don’t make anime like this anymore, most are cg and sound effects are just like the ones Hollywood uses nowadays, it lost the romance and soul of a true cell drawing animations. 😞

Young ones pay attention, this anime titled "Cross Fight!! Dangaioh" from AIC came out in 1987!! Character designs were by Toshiki Hirano who also did Iczer One and Vampire Princess Miyu. I checked out this anime back in 1987 thanks to a pen pal from Japan. Later next year, I purchased the actual video Laserdisc copy thanks to my friend from Japan!! Those were some good times!!!

Why 90s hand-drawn mecha looks way better than today's 3D CGI? Also it looks so smooth even tho the frame rate was like 12 or something...
@secretasianman108

OVA, due to the nature of their limited and sporadic release, could typically go up to 24 fps. There was simply more time for animators to work on such projects.

@@secretasianman108 its not about that at all. Animating on 1s isnt equal to good animation. Its not about budget, but about approach to animation itself, in 2d you can deform and experiment with shapes very "easily" while when working with cg you move already existing model, with no room to such experimentations.
@secretasianman108

@@AoiHeartStranger Never said anything about budget. Time is often correlative to a project's budget, but not direct substitute. Otherwise, yeah, dude, you make an EXCELLENT point. The rigidity of CGI is exactly why it's often the go to for mecha. You can have lotsa moving components without worrying about the design going off model, because unlike a person made of living tissue, it's harder to your brain to justify mechanical components deforming to a great extent. It's very hard to achieve that level of precision with hand drawn animation quickly, you need time to either do it carefully and the leeway to redraw mistakes. For example, Studio Sunrise was notorious for reusing animation on Gundam, particularly in the 90s, because this was the timeframe when those shows were airing back to back with basically no breaks in between. Could you blame them? They might as well have made a 230+ episode show, because THAT was hideous the production cycle they were on at the time. They've devised several workarounds though. Around 2007, they started splitting those 50ish episode series into 2 seasons, which allowed for more production time. They'll break out the CGI on scenes that'll otherwise kill an animator, like with the Gundam Unicorn transformation sequences. And most recently, they seem to be experimenting with drawing/ tracing over CGI rendered Gundam's, and holy heck, does it look GORGEOUS. I personally had a hard time telling the difference, at any rate.

@@secretasianman108 mobile suits in cucuruz doan movie looked pretty good, it's kinda hard for me to accept that, considering how i like 2d animation, but it looks like cgi robots now can look more than acceptable, and there is no point in trying to make tons of on model drawings of complex mechanical object in different perspective, when you can do that with cgi, and results wouldnt be sub par, i just think that mecha animation is a lot more than trying to keep everything on model, there is a lot of great works that doesnt do just that, Yoshinori Kanada or Masami Obari stuff for example, that kind of expressiveness just cant be replicated with cgi.
