I actually really like your video because it's all facts. I was sent there for 12 months while I was a US Marine back in 2001, so where they sent us it was obviously not safe. However since that date I have travel back there seven times and I'm currently building a home there. So I would like to think that I'm able to come up with a good opinion about their safety. I find it rather ignorant when people ask me "is it safe there". Because you can't answer a simple yes or no to that question about any place in the world.... All smaller towns or provinces are going to be safer, all larger cities are going to have bad areas. It doesn't matter what country you're in or what state you're in it still has crime. Would I walk around at 2 AM in a bad part of manila Philippines? No of course not. But would I do that in Chicago, New York or Detroit? Nope! I have to say all in all there is more safer areas in the Philippines than there is in America. And I would have to say that at least 95% of the people in their country are always friendly and willing to help out others. It's amazing how many people just smile at you and say "good afternoon, or how was your day?" Because overall they are happier people and they're willing to do more for people that they don't know. I smile more in the Philippines walking around that I ever would in America.

It’s me you’re absolutely rigth about this..Minnesota as a state is also not safe as what people in the Philippines might think so, they assumed that because were in US it is the safest country. Any else where you may live there is always a crime. But my experience with the island in Visayas which Bacolod City ( City of Smile) was really good people are so friendly and ask if you need their help which way you would go...fresh seafood and meat and lots of resorts to be found and falls hahahaha just imagine living this island... can’t wait to go back soon on May for good and see the white beaches again... I’m done here no more taxes to pay no mortgage no big bills and so and so and esp no more big insurance to pay but put savings for emergency’s only that’s it! What else you worry and being anxious everyday while you can be in a country like Philippines... only your bills was food, clothing,lights and water to pay cheaper than living in the US...every now and then you can have treat for yourself being with the nature esp beaches.. Goodluck

Let me know what you think! I know this video might get people confused (cause it's turning things around), but let me make some things clear: 1) I love the Philippines. If you doubt that after seeing this vid, I'd encourage you to watch again and check some of the conversation down below :) 2) I am not trying to be your government. I do not make any official statements - I do not guarantee any safety where ever you go in this world. What I want to state is: get information from more than one place (not mainstream media only). It's easy to get a one sided image of a place if you google on 'danger Philippines' - and get a whole lot of scary stories only. So if you search 'Dangers Philippines' I hope this video will give you a different view on the subject! That's all :) And remember: it's more fun when we meet on Facebook too :) facebook.com/TravelGretl/

I love the Philippines. I am so happy I got to go this summer. I want to go back again already. It was so beautiful. I went to Palawan and Cagayan de oro in Mindanao. The martial law was in affect which made things a little scary but that didn't stop me from enjoying my visit. We also stayed in Manila one night but I didn't get to see much of the city outside the hotel since we were just there for a layover . I was there three weeks and I felt this immense feeling of belonging. The people are friendly and make you feel at home. I can't wait to go back. Me and my boyfriend have discussed going back for our honeymoon when we get married. I just miss the Philippines so much already and I've only been gone two months.

"Danger" can mean a lot of things but personally, as far as being a victim of a violent crime or any of that sort, I have never really felt anything remotely close to it when I'm in the Philippines. Having said that, the only "danger" I sometimes experience deals with petty little opportunist crimes -- taxi drivers overcharging for fees, pick-pockets in the cities, etc. But yeah, in general, I've never really felt unsafe in the Philippines.

@ChristianPinay

It's because you don't know the "tawad system"😂 That's how it's always been done since the silkroad of China began. 😁 Observe how local businesses have been transacted somewhere in Binondo or Divisoria. You will be able to see what I mean. In the west you have the "bidding system". Here you have to bargain (Tawad system in which most foreigners deem as scamming mostly) for the lowest price until you agree or compromise at a certain amount. I also understand why certain driver's have to resolve to this. It's just sad because our certain legislators just copied western policies disregarding our way of life and culture. Therefore bills are passed and been made law by this country are actually hurting the average joe rather than helping. But I'm turn because it is not actually scam or illegal by default. Our gov't just copied the west in how to deal things to gain some sort of control over pricing and consumer demands etc Why drivers don't follow standard pricing? 1.) Traffic-most drivers are just making both ends meet. They are just regular guys trying to make a living for their families too. & is often = less time to pick up passengers = less passengers = no/less income = no food etc et al basic needs. 2.) These people living in the cities have higher cost of living too than people living in the province. Mostly, ppol in the city are raising for a costly lifestyle or piles of bills to pay. That is why you will likely encounter less people who will try to scam you in the province or remote islands. Unless it is really their agenda or livelihood or they belong to a syndicate is which is mostly found also in most progressive cities like Manila or Cebu or terrorist/rebels/NPA located mostly in southern mindanao. Just always keep your common sense when you travel and be informed when in my country. The rest! Enjoy! 😉

The Danger of going to the Philippines is...you want to comeback again, and again and again...I took my son back there when he was just a year old and has no re-collection. Never got to go home (besides once for emergency) again for multitude of reasons. He is now 23 and wanted to travel there since he is done with college. Similarly, one danger of him travelling to the Philippines is..."He may never want to leave". He laughed at me...and I just smiled at him. He will find out soon enough.

You're on point. I just can't imagine why PH is way below par with Thailand when it comes to tourist arrivals. What can you say about this?
@TravelGretl
7 жыл бұрын
True... think cause people get scared by the stories about kidnapping. There is still 1 Dutch guy for example that's being kept in the jungle. On I don't know how many tourists, and of course you forget it depends on where you go exactly - but still. People get scared from 1 story, while 100 good ones can't weigh that out. Also: Thailand is been known as a touristy destination for so long, even if a bomb explodes or there are riots, we all know too many people who had been there and see too many beautiful pics to get scared too much. Also curious how people are looking at Europe at the moment. We get less tourists too cause it seems to be scary here now

There’s always danger everywhere, but if you to a province or small islands in the Philippines, I am pretty sure you will be safe. And I am 100%, you will not go hungry. The locals will feed you. When I was growing up, I ask my parents...why do we have nice food when we have visitors? It’s in Filipino culture to treat any visitors very nicely, and you don’t have to be a foreigner...you can be a visitor from the next province or even from another bario😂. You will get fed and if you can’t go home at night, you’ll have a place to sleep.

I'm a Filipino who's fresh off the boat from California and I kinda avoid the messed up parts and change my accent a lot from time to time. Often times I just keep my head down. Because of my original South Cal accent I fall victim a couple of times by the bracelet/rosary scam. All the more worse since my mother is of Chinese-spanish decent. Paying 200 pesos for a 50 peso rosary or bracelet. Tell you what, if they say it's for a church, all the more you shouldn't. Churches don't do shakedowns plus most of these trinkets are done via shop either in an establishment or in the church. Don't feel guilty for turning them down. If they latch on to you then just toss them a twenty or something. I don't really blame you if you push them if they latch on to you. Its not like the bracelet scam at the EU. They prey on your conscience and your money. They would say for god and stuff but that's bullshit. If they were people of God, they wouldn't do this on the street and latch onto you like there's no tommorow. You can decline but trust me they won't listen to shit. As far as this goes, their is a certain racism towards foreigners sometimes. Some people would see you as your next meal ticket and look to you as rich. I just try to avoid talking whatsoever and only talk when needed. You can ignore them but keep note to be aware of your surroundings. At para sa mga Pilipino binabasa to, huwag ka magsinungaling. Alam mo naman meron ng mga to. Guilty tayong lahat May konting isip to dati and meron pa hanggang ngayon.

It isn't bad to appreciate a foreigner visiting our country. Its not bad if we react to it... you see, the Philippines is a small country and its not very common to see foreigners there and when we do, we get surprised and we all become as friendly, humble and comfortable as ever! We want you to feel at home and we want you to have a great time in the Philippines. Obviously, like in all countries we have our bad people you just have to be cautious. You just had a wrong use of words. Thank you for appreciating our country, but please... don't say "don't go to the Philippines" :) Love your Palawan video btw!

Lol. I just moved here this month and I love it. My biggest danger stray dogs in the middle of the road in the middle of the night while I am on my motorcycle. If you like what you are eating it may be best not to ask what it is unless you are adventurous.

There is risk everywhere. Even in the comfort of your own home. Just educate yourself on how to respond to danger or dangerous situations. Thank you Gretl for your kind words about the PI.

It totally depends on where you're at. I live in Pasig and the only danger is maybe getting mugged but it's not an insane chance unless it's night. Don't go into the south tho there is a lot of civil unrest going on. For the most part you'll be fine especially if you're foreign.

"Where are you going? " is the usual question Filipinos asked to anybody.. Well, foreigners may find it strange but it is just one of those questions aside from, "Where are you from?, Where are you staying? How old are you?", and a lot more.. Please don't misunderstand us, it's just the way we are..

Right! the ultimate tip when travelling everywhere in the world - "use common sense". Thats summed up everything. consult with your government travel guides, do a lot of research and plan ahead, connect with locals you can trust, expect things not going your way, your standards are different from others, respect the cultures, perhaps travel with companions, etc. I would like to add to not crammed your schedule and itinerary as there are lots of great things to do on the side, Great vid, watchout though, some pinoys will be confused.

only i can say if your a girl foreigner dont travel alone. you can travel alone but to only spots known and crowded and stay in a hotel or resort that has a tour transfer option. other ways to travel philippines to stay safe please be with your known filipino locals who will guide u and especially will recommend u where to go and where not.
