I think many people now a days focus to much on losing muscle from doing cardio. It’s like when girls are afraid to strength training because they don’t want to look too muscular. The adverse effects on both practices won’t be significant unless you are on both extremes. Be serious who is running 85+ miles and strength training and worried about losing muscle. At that point you are a runner and that’s your focus. It’s extremely healthy to do both so don’t worry about what if or I heard and do it.

I mean honestly, I'm at 50-60 miles per week and not worried about it. You'll maintain if you just hit the muscle groups every week. Am I gaining muscle? No. But my strength is not decreasing (yes, I know that's different from muscle, but I don't measure, so it's the closest metric I have).

His personal anecdote concerning HRV basically comes down to saying people should be savage like Goggins or something, not helpful at all. In my personal experience using Garmin (Body battery, HRV, not readiness score per se), if I see something out of the ordinary I just adjust my workouts. Instead of heavy low repetition sets of deadlifts I ease of and do lighter sets with a few more reps, instead of a longer run at tempo pace I do a shorter easy run. If I suddenly see a lot of stress at night, I might take a day of (I usually actually feel worn out by that point also). Every time I ignored what my device was indicating I either got sick or tweaked some muscle, preventing me from training properly for a longer duration. Better to miss a workout or have a few less effective workouts than not being able to workout at all. My job involves physical labour, maybe it's just me but even a common cold takes a while to pass if I need to be active while I'm feeling down, it's also not fun to have to be using a muscle all day long which you'd rather be nursing to recovery. I'm 44 years, not old but also not 25 anymore. I don't have any competitions where I need to prove myself and my future career mostly depends on being able to perform physical tasks, I just like to be somewhat healthy.

As an avid runner, as I add weekly miles my HRV is lower but Whoop accounts for the adaption based on time, and it reflects on recovery score. As I peak prior to a race, HRV starts rising reflecting a higher recovery score and peaking. Pretty accurate for me and my training.

Diagnostic screening for movement “quality” is not a good predictor of injury rate and movement quality also does not increase your chance for injury. You can see this all over the research on this topic. However, his comments on volume and adaptation are spot on and probably the most important when it comes to reducing your risk for injury. More supported in the research. You also cannot make your injury risk zero when using your body or training.

It is unbelievable, even as a personal trainer, to realise with every training session that you tend to increase the volume or intensity too quickly and pay for it. As a result, I always come back to cross training with swimming and spinning bike to prevent overload 😅

HRV trackers (Garmin and Whoop) can always tell after a night of drinking more than 2 or 3 drinks.
@gabrielhutschneker9159

@@ManuelAMartinez well, this is also due to higher pulse and higher body temp, not only HRV, and by that time, you will feel it yourself. Garmin-fanboy myself btw ;)

Great episode! However, I’d love to see a bit more engagement from you. It would also be nice if the episodes were a bit longer. Don’t get me wrong, almost 40 minutes is solid, but when it comes to podcast-style content, I’m more used to at least an hour.

My question is, why teams in sports that is worth billions use trackers and use all the data in their athletes? Is opinion is a bit “weird” for me.
