I have composed this work in the Summer 2005 on the commission of the "Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic Orchestra" (BMPO) in Zlin, Czech Republic, for the celebration of their 60th concert season. The main idea behind was to use myself at the organ (because the orchestra hall had the organ, and I can play it), and add also drums & percussion of the Brno group DAMA DAMA, as years ago I have promised to write some bigger work for them and we have been cooperating many times before, since their beginning. I also wanted to celebrate the industrial city of Zlin as former headquarters of Bata shoe imperium, full of modern functionalism architecture which I always admired and enjoyed as well as the soul of cosmopolitism Bata introduced. That's the reason for polystylistics atmosphere of my work where some motifs can remind world ethnic music, besides the inspiration in Moravian folk music.
This video was recorded at the concert in Zlin on November 30th, 2005 - the first (and until now also the last) performance of this work.
I have played organ part, drums & percussion soloists were three members of DAMA DAMA (Dan Dlouhý, Ctibor Bártek and Stanislav Pliska), with the great assistance of four drummers in the orchestra.
Conductor couldn't be better - an excellent Jakub Hrůša, that time the orchestra Chief Conductor and the rising star among young world conductors, with great carrier following during last years.
Structure of the work:
1. Fanfares (4')
2. Interlude for Organ and Percussion (2'30", connected with the next movement)
3. Elegy (3')
4. Interlude for Organ - Prelude, Fantasy, Toccata and Fugue on B-A-C-H (3'30")
5. Dance (2')
6. Interlude for Percussion (4'30", connected with the next movement)
7. Finale (1')
It's kind of symphony (intro movement, slow movement, scherzo movement, finale movement) with soloist parts and three "cadenzas" between movements.
Trivia:
- Old pipe organ Rieger&Kloss opus 3539 - 3 manuals, 54 stops, mechanic memories (I have used 4 presets)
- 113 drums & percussion instruments were divided among 7 performers, 50 different types (some in more pieces of different size)
Today - on November 30, 2015 - is 10th anniversary of this concert so I have used this opportunity to create this account on KZitem and this is my very first upload! More music videos will follow on this channel - stay tuned!
Sound in this video was captured only by small mike of Canon video camera so the audio quality is not the best one. I have uploaded new version with better sound from microphones in the hall.
