I have never cried at a piece of media until i heard this song. I've seen so many movies and felt bad for characters, but never actually broke a tear. But learning about how awful johnston's early life was and then hearing this is totally different. It's so clumsy and awkward, but its such genuine optimism from someone who was dealt such an awful hand in life. I can hear him wanting to convey this message by any means he can, even if he's not equipped with all the conventional knowledge of writing music. He just wants to share his hope that bad. And the fact its so flawed makes it feel so much more human. Its so beautiful and heart breaking at the same time. May Daniel rest well, cause i consider him a legend.

There’s something very endearing about the lack of perfectionism he has in his music, he just plays his songs because he absolutely loves doing it. He doesn’t care if it sounds kinda sloppy, or if his instruments aren’t tuned right. It’s like he becomes completely apart of whatever he’s playing, and all of his imperfections let his soul and emotions shine straight through the music, like sunlight shining through a dirty, broken window, but the window’s physical state represents decades of experience and circumstance, making it a beautiful symbol as well. Rest In Peace, Daniel, you were a very special person.

Best show I've seen in NYC, maybe 2007. At a point in the show, Daniel Johnston sat down on the stage and got quiet. He stopped stopped singing. We all had heard about this kind of thing in his performances when he stopped, the show was cut short, and it was over. Everyone looked around at each other, wondering what they were supposed to do now. A few people sat down, and then little by little, we all did. We were on the same level as him. Waiting. After 5-10 mins or so, he started singing again. It was the most connected experience I've had at a concert. I will remember it forever. It's hard to put into words but it was so humble and sweet.

The first time I played a song in front of others was during my sophomore year of high school in a German class talent show. I sang this song with a shitty ukulele. It was a fairly awkward stage of my life and I was really nervous going into it. To my surprise everyone seemed to like it and I left feeling I had done the song justice. From then on I've been much more comfortable playing for others, even though it's rare for me to do so. Rest in peace Daniel, and thank you for what you have given

I wrote a portion of my university dissertation about Daniel and his influence on the Austin indie music scene when he first moved there and started performing. There was a beautiful section in a book I read, "Hi, How Are You?", which talks about how at the time, a lot of indie music was very ironic, very sardonic, and very subtextual. But when Daniel first stepped up in an Austin club and played his honest, sincere songs, the crowd was absolutely captivated. He was the first one to sing honestly and genuinely, with no facade of coolness or fake intellectualism. He was just a pure, beautiful soul, singing his heart out. RIP Daniel, and thank you.

I remember when I was much younger, there was a documentary playing on the tv about Daniel Johnston. As I watched, I thought to myself, "his music sounds really boring, how can anyone like it?" but continued watching. At the end of the documentary after I watched his story and his struggles, they played his song "Some Things Last A Long Time" and it just struck me in a weird emotional way. Many years later, that song suddenly just slipped into my head and made me go back and look through Daniel Johnston's work (and love it). Strange. Some things really do last a long time.

I used to listen this song when i broked up a seven years relationship and was totally lost. In a way that comforted me. It was as if Daniel were saying "be patient." A few years later true love found me. Don't give up! :)

True love WILL find you in the end. Married and went through a nasty divorce. Thought I was finished with love and even spent 17 years single not wanting to experience that pain again. Then I found TRUE LOVE in the form of the sweetest woman I've ever met...from the other side of the world in Korea. Wasn't looking, and neither was she, but LOVE found us. As Daniel say's..."don't give up".
@CaptainPancakes

Congac Bodean Yeah but Daniel Johnston never married, never had a real girlfriend, likely never even had sex before, and lives with his parents at 54 because he can't really live on his own due to his crippling mental illnes (he's diagnosed as both bipolar and schizophrenic). It makes the song that much more sad to me, wondering if Daniel still holds out a hope of finding true love, even with his situation, at his age.

Your advice is about as good as this song. How many have not lost someone important? But we don't all cry at childish, un-musical, drivel like this song - and certainly not "most times [we] hear" it.

jawtek82 Un musical drivel is your main choice of music! if you cannot appreciate the chord progression and timing, and tuning of this song. And everybody deals with it. You just chose to type up a dumb comment. Just go back to your top 100 billboard songs and keep thinking your a good person.

im a big music collector but had not heard of Daniel until I read about his passing 20 minutes ago, so I searched him on KZitem, this is the first song of his I listened to, its recorded very amateurishly, the balance is all out of whack, it has an almost childlike innocence about its simplicity but it brought tears to my eyes, absolutely brilliant!

Once in a while, a pure and divine message is broadcast into this universe from that somewhere else, which pierces through your soul and touches that buried and undisturbed part of you; the part that is the connecting link to everything else. This is one of those messages. In no tangible way is this song special. But there is an ineffable quality there that makes it unbearably powerful. Few ever find a route into themselves that goes deep enough to pull something like this out, and fewer still have the courage and ability to convey it. Thank you, Daniel. Rest easy...

I dont think a single song has ever made me actually cry. I never cry, I've watched movies and listened to many sad and beautiful songs, watched beautiful videos on KZitem that also jerked a tear from me. But this made me cry instantly, its so genuine and beautiful. True love, that search that we search so frantically for in life. That which if most people stopped to look around would realize they have through friends and family. Some of the comments talk about this song from the perspective that Daniel was singing about romantic love and only that. Even if it was, it only makes the song more tragic in such a genuine way: he couldn't see the love of his own parents who he seemed to disdain in earlier years. Such a simple, beautiful song holy shit Edited because I realized I forgot to include words which would make this paragraph make sense
