For context. 8 of the starting 11 players on Clemson’s defense in this game were drafted (none lower than 4th round). 3/4 of the starting Dline went in the first 17 picks of the same draft. The two outside corners were a 1st and a 2nd rounder. The safeties were a 3rd and a 4th rounder. 10/11 are on NFL rosters (11/11 if they started their Nickel defense). For Duke. Only Jones was drafted and only LB Joe Giles-Harris is another Duke player on a roster.

As a Giants fan, color me impressed. Kid is vastly outgunned, in terms of surrounding talent, in almost every conference game. He's accurate, got a big arm, superior athleticism for his size. Against Clemson, he's knows he will be pressured every attempt, but makes good reads, has a quick trigger and gives his WR a chance. Compared to Haskins, who barely has to move his feet or ever come off his primary read. Haskins has guys running free and loads of time in a pristine pocket to make throws (which, to his credit, he makes). I dunno if Jones>Haskins in terms of a prospect, but I wouldn't count him out.

Give him a good coach and some talent around him and I'd bet he succeeds. Come to New England.

This game tape doesnt even let you evaluate the QB. He's pressured within 2 seconds on seemingly every passing down, his receivers don't gain much separation and drop the ball when it's completely catchable, and his coaches don't know how to call mesh concepts (literally the most successful play concept in college football) mesh plays make Dwayne Haskins a potential 1st round pick but Jones' coaches don't seem to know what that is.
@daniellivengood426

All I see is Ryan Tannehill part 2. All he can do is complete 5 yard outs and quick throws, missed on a lot of deep and intermediate shots. Everyone says his receivers failed him but a lot of those throws were off target and were really tough catches - too high or led them too much. Like the mobility but I feel like he’s got to handle the pressure better because the great clemson line is going to be what he sees every week in the nfl

I can't disagree with you, but to be fair he would have some better offensive minds and coaches to prepare him for tougher defenses. He also may be throwing those short ones because of the offensive scheme, I don't know Duke, but sometimes those short throws are effective in the NFL especially if New England gets him. But I agree, not a strong QB class in my opinion this year. I'd rank Jones 3rd though from combine and pro day highlights. Haskins. Lock. Jones. Murray. Grier is my order.

I think this game is a great indicator of what Daniel Jones is and really captures his strengths and weaknesses and how raw stats do not tell the complete story. First off, this kid has an NFL future. What I like: - Goes through his progressions - Plays the game at a good speed, moves his eyes well and sets his feet while also reacting competently to the pressure he was facing - Good ability to roll out and move outside the pocket when facing pressure. I like the way he threw the ball while moving to the left - Nice feel for the game, his team was clearly overmatched but he wasn't out there staring his receivers down or completely breakdown in the pocket - Plus athlete, good scrambler for a guy his size - throws with anticipation at a higher level than most college QB's What I didn't like: - Doesn't possess elite accuracy, he missed high on 2 throws where there was a play to be made for a substantial gain, he didn't even give his receiver a chance to go up there and make a catch ( 5min&40 seconds in and 5min&54 seconds in are the 2 plays I am talking about) - lobbed a few balls off his back foot, while off balance. That is a big no no and will lead to INT's at the next level - Low release point, for a guy his size to have 4 balls batted down at the line of scrimmage in a game is concerning - Struggles with throws to the sidelines and boundaries, the velocity on those throws are lacking, DB's will jump those routes at the next level if he doesn't improve his arm strength Overall, it is hard to dislike this kid as an NFL player. He's a good player. The question is if he can ever become good enough to justify spending the 6th overall pick on him. He can come in and absorb and transition to an NFL playbook quite easily, perhaps giving him an advantage over other QB prospects but he was also groomed to transition easily to a pro-style offense. But how much of an advantage is that really? Andy Reid adapted his offense to the strengths of Mahomes, Kitchens did the same thing with Baker and Kingsbury will most likely do the same with Murray. I just think that traditionalists fell in love with him because Jones reminded them of how " the QB position should be played", I just don't think he has the high end talent to ever be "the guy". I think his range is anything from Nate Peterman (don't laugh, Peterman was very solid at Pitt) and Nick Foles with Ryan Tannehill likely being best player comparison.
@draincleanermusic
5 жыл бұрын
not elite accuracy? you brung up two times in the whole entire game where he missed the mark, one of which he was literally being sacked and most likely just threw the ball away and one where the ball just slipped. that doesn't qualify as an issue. rest i pretty much agree with tho

*hard to eval on this. the one read, 1 step drop wr screen passes i dont even look at because anybody can do that. when pressured, his passes seem a bit helter skelter and not accurate which is a problem in the NFL. *some plays where he should have ate the ball instead of tossing it up. *appears to have limited mobility based on the speed of the game at the nfl level. i dont know. not saying he cant play. but definately not convinced he can. reminds me a little of ryan tannehill. * the one surprise i had watching this is a mega shit ton of passes knocked down around the line of scrimmage. *i also didnt see anything that wow'd me. i put him more on the andy dalton/ryan tannehill level. but like every year, some team will draft him too high because thats what teams do with QBs. * Summary: i would not draft him in the first round. 2nd-4th round talent, but some team will take him top 15, I'm sure.

No. Bortles’ issues were that he tried to do too much because of the lack of talent at OL and RB for the first 3 years. He adjusted very little to the incoming talent at those positions in year 4 and 5. As inconsistent as Bortles has been, his shortcomings falls squarely on Gus Bradley and his coaching staff. When you draft a player, ESPECIALLY a QB, it is the Coaching staffs responsibility to get him up to speed and fix any technique/mechanical issues that player has coming out of college. Because Bradley failed to hire a respected QB coach, Bortles could not make improvements to his game before or during the season. To Bortles’ credit, he did try to get help on his own through Tom House (a QB guru that guys like Tom Brady and Peyton Manning hold in high regard) once he figured out that the coaching staff wasn’t going to help him, but that was shut down after the 2015 season when OC Greg Olsen stop him from going back to Tom House that offseason. 2016 ended up being his worse season as a Jaguar. Long story short, do NOT draft a QB unless you have the proper QB coach in place...or you WILL set your franchise back for years.
