A great band with a deep understanding of history and identity, amusing and anti-zionist and one of the few bands who can sing in Yiddish, Hebrew, English and Russian.

Ha! I've just read Koestler's biography. A complicated chap to to say the least. I like the idea of jews being cattle herders, so different from the usual stereotypes. klezmer links would be fine, thanks, I've looked up bits and pieces on KZitem, but not regularly. Some friends (all gentiles, two ladies and not a lady) have formed a klezmer trio "Yiddle Sticks", accordion, fiddle and guitar. There are other players here, but no vocalists, at least none I've seen.

Generally sheep were more popular than cattle in those parts (not a lot of flat, lush grassland) but it is an intriguing inversion of stereotype that the ancient Hebrews were the Hillbillies of the Holy Land, with Philistines more advanced in industry and commerce, Canaanites more so in agriculture, and both more urbanized. The requirements of Bar Mitzvah did give Israelites an unusually high rate of (male) literacy, but the urbane traits associated with Jews were overwhelmingly adaptations to life in the Diaspora.

Thanks - do you needmy e-mail for links? I get the bit about nomadic then settled-ish. Were they were doing that before they were jews as well? Judea was a settled place tho?The debate about settlement leading to priesthoods and elites in all tribes interesting. The myth of the 'wandering jew' was introduced to my consciousness very early on.The Gypsies - or Roma, whichever you prefer, have some great music from Hungary/Rumania - linked down to Macedonia one way and India the other.

@Lagolop I agree Yiddish is fascinating, - tuvalu.santafe.edu/~johnson/articles.yiddish. I have only read Isaac Beshavic Singer in English translation, little of other writers who originally wrote in Yiddish tho I've watched some plays and old movies, know a little about klezmer,& jewish music of Roumania etc.,.Many words come in to cockney and wider slang. I am a devout atheist and internationalist - as I suspect DK band are - best wishes

Re "a devout atheist": that's either cognitive dissonance, de facto religion, or "the hounds of Heaven" yet pursuing you! I don't believe in the Tooth Fairy, Nigerian Prince emails, or that Jeff Epstein killed himself...but I wouldn't call any of those disbeliefs an object of devotion.

@joehiggs100 What I do appreciate the most is the use of Yiddish. I love that language. Yiddish, one of the the oldest Germanic tongues and still in actual use! Based on Medieval High German. The band isn't bad either and I like many of the tunes that DK sings. And I agree that arab nations (who are happily imploding ATM) and cynical Jew hating leftists and Israel deniers, do not help.

Are you fcking kidding? Do you not understand either Yiddish or Daniel's socialist workers' repertoire? Um Gottes Willen! (If that phrase strikes a chord closer to your understanding of any of this.) If you are actually literate, please read The Pity of it All, by Amos Elon, modern Israel's greatest journalist...and a staunch lefty, one of Israel's very last, who arrived in Palestine as a boy in 1933 and finally left with a broken heart, totally disgusted, at the age of 82. Du verstehts von nichts.

The so-called "Yiddish" translation is incorrect, awful and anti-Yiddish, to say the least. Mr. Kahn's command of Yiddish is totally inadequate and he makes a mockery of a beautiful, expressive literary language. A translation in good, authentic Yiddish would be interesting. If this singer knows hardly any Yiddish, he does have a lot of nerve (KHUTSPE). He apparently doesn't understand the original German text properly, and when it comes to poetic talent he's hopeless.. There are good translations in English and French. This singer is doing Yiddish a disservice. The moral of the story is: you can't fool all of the people all of the time.
