I'm 82 plus (smile)...and our first of 6 sons...wife named him Danny. Anyway, while in the hospital the morning he was born the local radio station called to congratulate and wanted to know if wife had a song request...and she requested "this" song. That was way back in 1959. My wife knew the popular songs quite well because her father whom she adored would set her on the top of a kraut barrel(?) and sing to her many of the then popular songs. She has sung many of them to me over the years! Awesome memory...huh?

6 sons wow!!! That is awesome. I have one brother. My dad had lots of brothers but they all are 6 feet deep. He is 84 and going strong but he is deaf and doesn’t use the hearing aids. Do you know why someone would not use this marvellous technology?

@@tdog5993 First, thanks for your reply! Re: hearing aids... I got spinal meningitis at age 4...lost hearing in one ear due to nerve dead...and only 35% in the other. I was in my late teens before first hearing aid for the one ear. They have helped over the years, but they're just that..."aids"...not the same as natural hearing. This year my wife and one son decided that I should get the latest technology...so now I have one over the one ear that just transmits the sound to the "good" ear and hearing aid/amplifier. It helps enough that I use them, but I still have problem with understanding spoken words clearly. If I increase the volume so that I feel it should be good, then, I get all kinds of "skreeching" sound that drive ya crazy...smile. I can understand why some don't want to deal with it...however, it does make others crazy...Grin!

@@sk8rjer wow thanks for the information. You are very respectful. Also it’s amazing that you were sick when you were 4 and you are still here ~78 years later! I definitely need to learn more about hearing aids. My dad’s look so cool honestly I want to try but my ears are great. My eyesight is very bad but of course I have glasses. Do you think I love wearing the glasses? Not always, but most of the time it’s ok. But I can’t live without them. So it’s not the same thing with these little things that you put in your ear(s)?

Danny Boy Oh Danny Boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling. From glen to glen and down the mountain side. The summer's gone, and all the flowers dying. 'Tis you, 'tis you must go, and I must bide. But come ye back when summer's in the meadow, or when the valley's hushed and white with snow. 'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow. Oh Danny Boy, oh Danny Boy, I love you so. But when ye come and all the roses falling, and I am dead, as dead I well may be, Go out and find the place where I am lying, And kneel and say an Ave there for me. And I will hear tho' soft your tread above me, and then my grave will warm and sweeter be. For you shall bend and tell me that you love me, And I will sleep in peace until you come to me.

Why don't you people that are so hateful about this song and the artist go crawl back under your bridges. Why are you even listening to this genre? The song is beautiful. I doubt if you even know what it's about. If you do know and still say something like that you are cold- hearted. Please let them enjoy it without your ugly comments.

Thank you for listening to this beautiful and touching song, friends...I hope I can call you that. The haters are missing so much. Can they not let their hearts soften enough to close their eyes and just listen the melody and the words? What hard hearts they must have. Drink a Guiness and smile while a tear runs down the face. For information....a song, if you have never heard it...Johnny Boy reminds me of Danny Boy...not just the names, either. Both poignant and both truly Irish songs. I like the version by Gary Moore. Listen and see if you like it, too. He speaks of the Wicklow Mountains and the River Shannon. Beautiful.

As Lawrence Welk would say, "Wonderful". The steel guitar in the band was like a breath of fresh air. This song has stood the test of time. The music world would call this a "standard" and it will be sung down through the ages.

I used to be a beat cop a long time ago. And I'd get called out on domestic disputes all the time, hundreds probably over the years. But there was this one guy, this one piece of shit, that I will never forget. Gordy, he looked like Bo Svenson, you remember him? Walking Tall? You don't remember? Anyway, big boy. 270, 280. But his wife, whatever she was, his lady...was real small. Like a bird. Wrists like little branches. Anyway, my partner and I got called out there every weekend, and one of us would pull her aside and say "come on, tonight’s the night we press charges." And this wasn’t one of those deep-down he-loves-me set-ups - we get a lot of those - but not this. This girl was scared. She wasn’t going to cross him, no way, no how. Nothing we could do but pass her off to the EMT’s, put him in a car and drive him downtown, throw him in the drunk tank. He sleeps it off, next morning out he goes. Back home. But one night, my partner’s out sick, and it’s just me. And the call comes in and it’s the usual crap. Broke her nose in the shower kind of thing. So I cuff him, put him in the car and away we go. Only that night, we’re driving into town, and this sideways asshole is in my back seat humming "Danny Boy." And it just rubbed me wrong. So instead of left, I go right, out into nowhere. And I kneel him down, and I put my revolver in his mouth, and I told him, "This is it. This is how it ends." And he’s crying, going to the bathroom all over himself, swearing to God he’s going to leave her alone. Screaming … as much as you can with a gun in your mouth. And I told him to be quiet. Cause I needed to think about what I was going to do here. And of course he got quiet. Goes still. And real quiet. Like a dog waiting for dinner scraps. And we just stood there for a while, me acting like I’m thinking things over, and Prince Charming kneeling in the dirt with shit in his pants. And after a few minutes I took the gun out of his mouth, and I say, "So help me if you touch her again I will such-and-such and such-and-such and blah blah blah blah blah". Just trying to do the right thing. But two weeks later he killed her. Of course. Caved her head in with the base of a Waring blender. We got there, there was so much blood you could taste the metal. The moral of the story is: I chose a half measure, when I should have gone all the way. I’ll never make that mistake again. No more half measures, Walter
