Never had any nice shoes growing up. Left for the Marine Corps right after my 18th birthday, saved some money and spent $200 on the nicest pair of footwear I’ve ever had up to that point after boot camp; Danners. They were too heavy to Be practical for an infantryman and fell apart in less than a year. I’m still looking for the ideal “SHTF” durable combat style boot, might pick up your next apocalypse boot when it’s announced.

The thing with Gore-tex is, imho it's used in a flawed way on that style of boot. Why? well it's actually really simple and obvious if you think about it: What gore tex essentially is, is a fabric made from PTFE that has microperforations caused by the material being spread multiple times its size and the quickly being shrunk, so it has this really small perforations that are 28,000 mm smaller that a drop of water, so when you try to get it wet, you simply can't, because the water cannot go trough it because of the size of them. Now, as Weston points, this is essentially a sock that is between the layers of the boot, meaning the outer layer (in this case being leather) isn't waterproof itself, thus letting water go trough the gore tex layer. This is a not very good or smart way to make something waterproof, since you're essentially making a puddle in your feet, right? Well, what if i told you that this is a issue no with the material itself, but rather how the manufacterer (Danners in this case) don't really have a tought out desing, because there are other kinds of gore tex footwear that don't have this issue, how? Well, again, it's quite simple, and it's because the 3 layer gore-tex that you see in jackets is that way because those layers (Liner, gore-tex membrane and outer fabric) are fused together, meaning they're basically just one piece of fabric, so when they are using that exact same method on footwear, you don't have a puddle in your feet situation, simply because there's nowhere for the water to accumulate in the footwear, this is merely a Danners construction issue, Gore-tex normally doesn't have the flaws described in this video, those being: Not as durable: Well, if you put a very rugid fabric on the outer layer and in the liner, then really the gore-tex membrane itself is as durable as the most rugid fabric in the 3 layers. Difficult to replace: Sure, you might not be able to sew it together or to simply replace the whole thing, but you can add patches to it that are of the same kind of fabric that the outer layer is made of (Mostly, it depends on the variation of gtx and the manufacterer, but you get the point.) And prone to defects: This again, is solved by the method i described earlier, how can the gtx membrane be damaged if it's essentially as strong as the outer fabric since they're fused together? It's harder to damage that way. Hopefully this informs people that the membrane itself isn't the issue, and more so the construction employed here.

Danner has been shifting to fashion boots for quite awhile. They used to build more styles in Men's B width but since the buy out they only have 2 or 3 models available in narrow width. They only care about the bottom line. It wouldn't surprise me to see all production shifted overseas.

I'd like to know how Danner does the factory service resole for these things. Some of the Italian hiking boot companies do a resoleable cemented boot (like Asolo, i think), and when they take it apart they grind off the base of the sole instead of just ripping it off the leather upper. I have some stitchdown Danner hunting boots I'm pretty happy with, but the model is discontinued and if I had to get a new pair of waterproof cold weather boots to replace them with, I might go with something else because of Danner's prices.

I mean, if the materials are good, for fashion use it wouldn’t be a bad compromise to have it be cemented. I only once tried to resole my shoes - the quoted price was only $5 less than I spent to buy them new (from the outlet), and despite being 3/4 Goodyear welted, the guy legit went, it can be resoled maybe twice, not the best leather (women’s dress shoes, fair enough). The original soles lasted years though! But yeah, not worth it to resole - I had huge nicks and scratches on both toes.

That is a lot of cash for crappy boots. This is why I use military surplus leather boots. Not the kindest to your feet if you pass the 8 hour threshold, but they fucking last. For 40$ you get brand new boots, good enough to last at five years of regular use. If the sole gets worn you can replace it. The difference between military grade and civilian boots is that the military stuff is made as cheap as possible to do a proper job for a few years in bad conditions, while most civilian boots are "made" (read as sold) as expensive as possible to barely do the job of occasional wear for a couple of years.

Long time Danner customer and it's disappointing to see this model. Most recently I bought a pair of stitched Danner Duty Masters in 2017 on clearance sale. The pair were made in the early-mid 1990s and remained lost in a large stockroom over 20 years (!!) till the store closed. They were undamaged with no seam, stitch or glue separation and only a little leather drying. And they're still just fine in 2023. When I wrote Danner asking about them they had no clue of this model. They forgot everything I guess.

My dad however lives in the mountains of Colorado and wears his every single day. And he agrees, best boot he’s ever worn by far, and they are super durable for him. He’s been wearing the same pair for near two years near everyday and they just look like well worn boots with a lot of life left in the sole, and they’re re-craftable. Most hiking and mountain boots (including boots far tougher than these Danners) are glued only construction. Even those with 2.8mm leather uppers. It's not a problem nowadays with modern glues and manufacturing processes. As far as the Goretex membrane is concerned it's usually bits of grit that work their way into the boot, that puncture the GTX membrane. Boots lined with Goretex never breathe as well as boots without the membrane. Perhaps 30% as well, though the boots liner material on the inside against the foot will absorb a certain amount of moisture. Also, when the boot outer is saturated, the membrane will breathe much less (or not at all). This can be mitigated to some degree by treating the outer of the boot with leather waterproofing products . The biggest problem with GTX boots IMHO is that in wet conditions, water gets into the boots from splashing over the top or from rain running down your trouser and doesn't get out as it has to evaporate first which is not really going to happen when your foot is sitting in a puddle. And they take an age to dry out and often smell REALLY badly when they do.

I really would love to see the danner quarry and super rainforest cut in half to see if they are worth the money.

You've really sold out to the pro-consumer lobby. You make all your money from all these individuals looking for a good product. Think of the company's needs! 😂 Keep up the good work Anvil.

Love your reviews. Would you ever consider reviewing hiking boots? In specific, the Zamberlan 996 is a very popular all leather boot and I'm curious to see your impressions and take a look at what's inside the boot.

Weston, I had a idea with all the shoelaces you cut up! It would be awesome if you saved the laces and made a giant shoelace ball similar to a iconic rubber band ball! It would be interesting to see how large the shoelace ball would grow to be! Food for thought man!

Why these when you can get a superior boot in the Logger 917 for $50 (or more) cheaper?
