You’re right! Specially when Danny Kaye was of Hebrew descent and Hava Nagila is an Hebrew song. But I loved it when in a joking manner Harry pointed to Danny “wrong country”, as Danny was doing the pharaohs’ dance, moving just the head from side to side. Pharaohs we’re from Egypt, whom kept the Israelites enslaved. Just in that phrase Harry showed so much culture and knowledge of music and dance. I’ve always admired these two legends. And man, was Harry oh so handsome and classy!

I came across Kaye once when I was a kid, at Heathrow airport. He was standing around in a departure lounge, as were we, with an assistant of some description. He had a magazine in his hand and every 20 seconds or so he would drop it and the assistant would pick it up. This went on for about 10 minutes until some compassionate member of the public beat the assistant to it, picked up the magazine himself and smacked Kaye hard over the head with it, then shoved it his chest. He didnt drop it again. Nice Mr Kaye.

When I was 17, I bought Harry Belafonte’s album when he sung at Carnegie Hall in NYC. It was called “Calypso” music from Jamaica, at the time. He sang songs....most beautifully, from various countries, i.e., Hava Nagila; Danny Boy, etc. Harry Belafonte owned a house in Malba, Queens, NY., an exclusive housing area. Us, teen buddies, would drive there, not far from our Whitestone residents, & pass his house shouting, “Harry, Harry, Harry!” Memories of Queens. 💖 God bless you, Harry, whenever you are! 🙏🏼

He is an Arabic-speaking singer and Jewish oud player from Algeria. Teacher of Arab-Andalusian music, Jewish who sings.
