Daredevil has always had some of the best action out of all the marvel shows and movies, but the monologues... God the monologues... They are what put this show a cut above, up onto the level of the best dramas and pieces of serious theater of our time And the delivery is downright shakespearean. Matt gives so many Hamlet vibes with his should-I-or-shouldn't-I morality soliloquies on murder and the whole murdered father thing. Matt Murdock is a very complex person. He is a very religious, but has to commit sins to protect his city, thinking he has the devil in him. He thinks what he is doing is wrong, but at the same time he knows its also right and that duality is something he have to deal with as a lawyer and his vigilante alter ego. Its quite an interesting character and being blind is just part of it.

Omg I had the exact same thought when the scene ended, and then the docks scene ended and I thought "This is gonna be REALLY good". There's so many great things about this scene, but what I find the most remarkable is the way they use the light in this scene; it's just shady enough to outline his face, while you can see his dark eyes with just these little white dots in them making it look like he actually is some kind of demon or something - it's just awesome.
@FourEyedFrenchman

"That's not how this works." Very true. You go to confession to be absolved of what you've done, not what you're about to do. However, if you're making a sincere confession, your voice quivers the same way Charlie Cox's voice does here. You're coming face-to-face with who you truly are, what you've done, and it's terrifying and humbling all at the same time. I could barely speak in my first confession, but there was something otherworldly about saying what I said to another human being, and being absolutely certain I was forgiven. Confession is a powerful thing. Best part is, you don't even have to be Catholic to go. If you don't know the steps and prayers, the priest will walk you through it.

Old video, but I rewatched daredevil recently and this scene got me thinking; Matt describes his father's 'Devil' as 'His eyes would go dead...he'd put his hands by his sides, like he wasn't afraid of anything'. Not only is daredevil a character defined entirely by fear, and overcoming it (the man without fear), it also perfectly describes how Matt greets Fisk in their final confrontation. Dressed in his 'devil' outfit. Dead eyes(red, unable to see the eye itself). Hands by his sides. He isn't afraid of anything, not even Fisk

I've been watching and rewatching the show ever since it came out, but only today I realized something. When Matt says that when his dad was fighting every now and then his eyes would go dead, he'd start walking and trap the other guy in a corner and let the devil out he mentions that he didn't understand what he was feeling, not back then, implying that he does now. The key phrase there being that his father's eyes would go dead. For Matt it isn't just an expression, after he had his accident his eyes literally went dead. That little line explains Matt's life. His eyes went dead, and he let the devil out. Fucking poetic. When it comes to TV shows that I love I either love them so much the first time that I never experience them the same way again, or I start getting bored and tired of them the more I watch them. Daredevil has gotta be the only show that the more I watch, the more I love.

I watched the 1st episode with him, I had no idea how the first scenes were, my only memory was that was one of the best shows I've seen. This scene is written, acted and filmed almost to perfection, it hit me like a truck even though I've seen it, long ago. I recommend watching it carefully, it is very powerful and one can get easily overwhelmed with awe. Nevermind the edgy/catchy lines "oohh forgive for what I'm about to do", this whole show hits so hard on a conceptual level, and it is sometimes subtle.

Jack Murdock had his flaws, but to have the reputation of never being knocked out during a boxing match is high praise. The Punisher may have told Matt that each criminal he(Matt) takes down gets back up. What Frank didn't know at the time is that Matt obtained that same stubbornness from his father. Matt may have been knocked down a lot, but he always got back up. Someone once said that you can't truly beat someone who never gives up. You can only hit them, even to the point of killing them, but if they keep coming at you, not even killing them will give you the satisfaction of beating them. Even dead, they would win.

[first scene of the series: Matt Murdock goes to confession] Matt Murdock: Bless me Father, for I have sinned. It's been, uh…it's been too long since my last confession. My dad, he used to come to this church back when I was a kid. He was a fighter. Old school. Boxer. Lost more than he won. Had a 24-31 record before he, uh… But he could take a punch. Jesus, he could take a punch. Father Lantom: Language. Matt: Sorry, Father. Yeah... Guys he went up against used to say it was like hitting oak. And nights when he was outmatched, my dad's strategy was to let 'em hit him 'till they broke their hands. Never got knocked out, my dad. Knocked down, sure, but he, uh, always got back up. He was always on his feet when he lost. Every now and then, though, uh… Every now and then, he'd get hit and something inside him would snap. My grandmother… She was the real Catholic. Fear of God ran deep. You'd have liked her. She used to say, "Be careful of the Murdock boys. They got the devil in 'em." And you'd see it sometimes in the ring. His eyes would go dead… and he'd start walking forward real slow, hands at his sides like he wasn't afraid of anything. And the other guy, he'd see that look, and he'd try to get away from him. Nah. My dad, he'd catch him and trap him in a corner. Let the devil out. Yeah. Now, I didn't understand it, you know? What he was feeling deep inside, I didn't understand it. Not back then. Lantom: But you understand it now? Perhaps this would be easier if you tell me what you've done. Matt: I'm not seeking penance for what I've done, Father. I'm asking forgiveness…for what I'm about to do. Lantom: That's not how this works. What exactly are you about to do? [Matt doesn't respond]

i love how his shades mean metaphorically "its justice mode" now. its like, he talks without them and we see a side of him, humanized and soft, reliving his trauma. and then when he puts those shades on, its like a filter. i mean yeah he already is blind, but when he covers his eyes, it symbolically represents that "justice is blind". all that softness and humanity suddenly went away and he turned harsh and cold because justice is exactly that - dura lex sed lex - the law is harsh but it is still the law, and in here, though law may be inadequate in certain instances, that does not mean i will not be harsh extrajudicially in giving out what needs to be given. just realized the symbolism just now.

You know it all makes sense. “The Devil of Hell’s Kitchen” he’s doing gods work, punishing evil like the devil does

@@aceraphael Do evil shit, you end up in Hell, punished for all time by the Devil. In catholosism, the devil was cast out by God for he loved him too much, and refused to love humankind more, which is what God commanded. it does make sense.

@@actinganimagus I am a Catholic and that is not what the church teaches. The Devil was thrown out because of his pride. Lucifer was one of the best. He worshipped himself and that was the problem. Pride brought him down.

@@aceraphael Well in some teachings it goes that Lucifer loved God too much, and wouldn't "lower himself" to love humankind, which could be because of his pride? I guess it depends on who you ask, and different interpretations?

@@aceraphael “Nothing gets people to Church faster than the thought of the Devil nipping at their heels. Maybe that’s why God cast him out. As a means to keep Man on the righteous path” - Father Langton episode 8, season 1. That's the in universe reason why Matt chooses the Devil costume. To keep "sinners" in line.
