if they are willing to spend upwards of 900K for a new house, then why not just spend the extra $38,000 to get the basement done right? it is still less money in the long run.

One of the reasons owners tend to stay in their renovated homes may be because there are costs associated with a home sale that this show never includes in the “worksheet” at the end. Commissions usually run 4-5% of the sale, a huge expense. And there’s moving costs too.
@AFAskygoddess

Yes! You're lucky if the moving cost is under $10,000. Commissions in the US are generally 6% of the sale.

They've already moved out, so wouldnt it cost the same to move to one house or the other? But i agree that there are more costs than said. And new house was 100,000 over budget. I think organization downstairs could give the man his own space without a bunch of $.

Just because your sister and her husband were happy living in a 1,200 sq ft home doesn't mean that's how it should be for everyone. Let me help you understand. *It was THEIR preference.* I'm single. I downsized from a 2,200 sq ft home to a 1,450 sq ft home when I retired. I use every inch of it. If I were to ever live with someone again, this house would be too small for MY lifestyle.
