Located in Sonoma Wine Country, this house underwent a second phase of design that transformed it from a one-bedroom retreat into a dynamic weekend home for a growing family. The original residence consisted of two perpendicular blocks, forming an L-shaped plan, with a compact kitchen, primary bedroom, and a guesthouse.
The architects added a central volume and extended the east-west block, expanding the private wing of the house and creating a T-shaped layout. It now features an updated and secluded primary suite that offers expansive views of the valley and distant hills. A new kitchen, designed for entertaining and family meals, was inserted in the protected intersection between the public and private wings, seamlessly connecting with the outdoor spaces such as living areas, dining, and pool. Additionally, a separate structure houses a yoga and Pilates studio, which also functions as a media center, creating a peaceful retreat in a wooded area.
The public wing of the house runs along the ridge of the hill and houses a spacious room with high ceilings and a simple shed roof, immersed in multidirectional views and natural light. Four large counterweight glass doors open dramatically on both sides, transforming the space into an outdoor pavilion. The level concrete floor extends to a poolside patio on the west and a terrace with a fire pit on the east, providing a comfortable outdoor living area in any weather. With the doors open, the site offers a continuous and panoramic view, from the pool through the spacious room, and down to the distant town below. Subtle architectural details in the space add refinement and functionality, such as sound-absorbing perforated panel ceilings and discreet stone strips that visually delineate areas without physical barriers.
The Sonoma Wine Country house features dark cedar siding, softly illuminated plaster walls, and low stone walls that anchor the structure, offering an updated and thoughtful response to the terrain and the ever-changing needs of the clients. The residence is a private and comfortable rural retreat that maintains a strong connection with the surrounding landscape.
