Yeah, Dark Hero Party video! I played Pray Game like a year and a half ago and became absolutely obsessed with U-ROOM and played every game they made after that. Their games are all very different, so I think not many people would actually like all of their games, but they all have a focus on symbolism and themes that make them all very interesting to me (while also being high-quality in all the other important areas too). Sadly this game and Pray Game are the only ones translated right now. If I had my way I'd at least want Bloody Virgin translated as well because I'm completely obsessed with that game in particular, but it's also kinda old and the h-scenes are kinda brutal even compared to their other games, so it's hard to see it getting translated. Back to the main topic but very good video! DHP is kinda an oddity among U-ROOM games in that the gameplay is very obviously secondary to everything else instead of being a main focus in its own right, but I think that works well for this game, for all the reasons you mentioned. I found your reading of Lotia very interesting as well. She's one of the games's most complex characters (which is saying something) and her eventual turn over to Thrash's side is core to the game in many ways so there's a lot of interesting things to be said about her. Thanks for the video!

Lotia's treatment by the community is something that's always bothered me but I guess that's the fate of all NTRPG heroines.

@@revivalfromruins Yeah I agree there. She's far from a perfect human but it's sad that a lot of people seem to just stop at pure hatred of her rather than any attempt at understanding her as a character. Though the way people react when it comes to NTR is weird to me in general.

Great video! Total justice done to a game that is very aligned to what I like, but isn't for everyone. I'm glad & thankful for your sell of what makes it click, despite & bc of its tone & content. Looking forward to maybe a Pray Game coverage from you in the future!

I won't be playing this (especially since I watched the entire vid so I know the endings now), but it doesn't look like it would be for me anyway. However, great analysis, I enjoyed hearing you thoughts on it. It does seem like a great game if you can get past the unconventional approach to the storytelling. Hopefully people will try it out because of this vid.

Well, in the Mass Effect series, if you romance the character infamous for being the worst of the companions, Jacob, he cheats on you and has a baby out of wedlock.

Just finished it myself, found it from your vid. I really liked Imos more than the usual JRPG protag just because he always tries something whether it's pathetic or not while also not being the smartest guy, he is not lazy (even though he says that he is). Aina is the best ever. thx for the info on the game, was a pretty fun read.

Dude are you some kind of jrpg guru??! All your recommendation Black Souls, Demon Roots and now Dark Hero Party was GREAT! The final battle with thrash is really the highlight for me, Imos CG portrait in that battle was chef kiss! The only thing I can complaints is that it short. Even in hard mode its only 10 hours. Will be waiting again for your next game review. Demon lord simulator is A+!

I hate it when games make you a monster to kill a monster and then make you seem like the bad guy like imagine of someone broke into your house and stabbed you mom or something so you stab them back and the killer turn around and says look you and I are the same like wtf are you talking about it's the worst plot device ever

I did not watch yet the full video because I might get spoiled. But since you are the one who let me discover Blacksouls and Demon Roots. I gonna play it now and comeback to this video after finishing it. If Blacksouls and Demon Roots is S tier, what is your rating for Dark Hero Party?

Hope you like the game. If Black Souls and Demons Roots are S tier, then DHP would be A tier. A bit below those two, but still really good.

I hate NTR and rape but I made myself play through this game because I like dark stories and suffering (sometimes). Just gonna say that I think the gameplay is pretty terrible here. I don't mind traditional JRPG combat when it's done right (see The Last Sovereign), but this game does not do it right. Skills are boring and roles didn't seem well defined to me. MC's skill having a high miss chance is just obnoxious savescum inducing bs. I did like the emphasis on guard in the early parts at least, not enough games make it useful. Some fights are a massive difficulty spike while the others are just filler but still take too long for some reason. Having a party for the revenge route seemed so pointless when the MC was so, so much stronger than them at that point (and gets an even greater power boost if you choose to solo the "final" fight, making it really easy). But the absolute worst offender is the many fights you can't win. I've never seen a game play this trope so poorly. One of the thug guard enemies you fight literally doesn't have a health bar. If you cheat your stats to max he won't die no matter what. And you're expected to "lose" to this guy like 6 times to progress. It even caused me a great deal of confusion as I'd saved up all the dragonisers at this point and wasn't sure when it was "safe" to use them. This isn't breaking or shocking the player, it's just making them frustrated. Perhaps even worse is the first thug fight where I legit kicked his ass and got the gold and exp but the game treated it like I lost. Then the exact same thing happens again in the same area later... why?? If you want to make a fight unwinnable at least add a cutscene or something. Or make the fight actually unwinnable legitimately. This is just incredibly lazy. Having everyone pretend I'm still as weak as when I was level 1, despite doing similar damage to them later on, was a little annoying as well, but I don't expect a writer to cover all the bases. As a player, I despise having my agency taken away like this. It's a hack that detaches the gameplay from the narrative reality attempting to be portrayed and makes me wonder why I'm not just playing a VN (or one of those pseudo-VN cutscene games). There are some annoying QoL issues as well. Why can't scenes be skipped or at least sped through properly? Especially as the expectation to get all the endings is to sit through the same scenes and dialogue again. Why is there no auto-dash feature? Anyways as for the good. The game did a decent job of filling me with disgust and contempt for the situation. Some of the writing felt unrealistic and contrived but it's forgivable for the genre of the game, as I understood what the writer was going for. Once the revenge route showed itself I gladly jumped on it, being on a similar wavelength to the MC at that point. Endings 3 and 4 did a great job of showcasing the classic dichotomy between getting revenge and living a happy life. Ending 4 was surprising to me in fact as I'd gone in expecting no "good" ends. 5 felt a little superfluous and maybe a line or two of dialogue from Behelnicht would've been nice. 6 was decent I guess. The game pivots to a somewhat distorted version of the entropy vs order dichotomy and in the end Behelnicht makes the "right" choice, betraying her intended nature. Characters were so-so. Won't bother going in-depth here, but overall I found the main girls to not be compelling. Thrash seemed to get the most development and Behelnicht was the most interesting (to me). Assym was used well. The others I don't care about. Overall I thought this game was "ok". It didn't have much emotional impact beyond the expected contempt and disgust. Honestly, I feel genre-confused since I thought NTR was about having your wives or girlfriends stolen from you. Is it really NTR if childhood friends who are not romantically involved get taken away, enslaved and gang-raped by thugs? That's just straight-up misery porn in my books. So the NTR tropes that did make it into the game (like being imprisoned next to Thrash's room) felt weird and forced to me. But I don't understand this genre, and I'm glad I don't.

what a promising title for something as unrelentingly dull as some NTR shit. Who is emotionally affected by that other than straight guys who've never dated?
