I actually went back to fight Midir as the last boss in a chronological order for myself. I tried a couple hours fighting him one day and just couldn't get him. I made sure I was the right level, I tried to exploit his weakness and even tried co op. I hopped on the next day and on my third attempt I finally downed him and felt like a god. Nothing has made me feel so satisfied in a video game as well as that victory. You truly feel like you're fighting a dragon raised by the gods in that battle. To me Darkeater Midir is probably my favorite and most difficult fight in the whole souls series. What a way to end it.

Midir is dogshit. Pure trash. Horrific camera (like every other large boss). You spend more time chasing him around the arena like every other dragon fight to get hits in (when possible). He does ridiculous damage. He has way too much HP. There's no real instinctive dodging to his moves, you essentially have to plan out what he's going to do so you'll be in a position to whack his head when he's finally done flailing around and shooting fire. He just plain sucks. There are fun and difficult fights, and then there are fights that are difficult for all the wrong reasons, and Midir falls into the latter category.

Alberto Ocada Only did it on NG+5. I can't imagine what horrors await in +7. Midir took me an hour and a half, and Gael at least 45 minutes. Having said that, on my final run, I did both almost without getting hit (only took a couple tries before I could completely avoid damage on Gael's first phase, and I was mostly getting hit on the 2nd and 3rd due to bad roll directions).

PGSawesome Demons took me 3 hours, Midir took me like an hour and a half as well, but oh man, Gael took me like 5 hours lol. Especially since my main weapon was the Onyx Blade and I'm pretty sure he's like super resistant to Dark, and I generally don't like to switch around my builds but I did end up using other weapons. Not to mention I get one-shot by the Harald knights and two-shot by the Ringed Knights. I could just be bad though cause it shouldn't be that much worse than NG+5. It was fun nonetheless.

For Midir, the fight as a melee is extremely intense and that's where D is coming from but if your truly having a lot of trouble taking him down, summon a mage or ask a friend that's a mage. Pestilent Mercury, for those that don't already know, is a major weakness to Midir because a lot of the time he stands there breathing fire or lashing out his claw, Leaving a major window for PM to work its magic. If your on your first play through or on new game + having 40 in intelligence and a fully maxed court sorcerers staff will make the fight much easier if not maybe a bit longer.

I made it to phase 3 every time, even my first, yet it never felt easy. Defeating him brought on the most epic emotion ever. I looked at my estus counter, 7 +9 left. I can mostly agree, but in my experience, the dark swampy area was one of my favorite areas in the entire game. I think it was just the intro, walking out into the area and seeing Judicator Argo lumbering around in the distance was immensely.. atmospheric, for lack of a better word. Plus it was cool just wandering around the ruins and darkness. I do agree there should have been more there, though. More buildings, more enemies, more gigantic terrors in the background.

I don't know if I'm more sad to see darks souls go or your souls rankings, but if I'm going to be blunt, Gael came as a massive surprise and relief at the end of the DLC. After spending hours trying to kill Midir, I finally gave up and defeated the Spears of the Church (Sorta lazy but it's god damn fun to do a boss invasion). After my weak and beaten character touched the embraced shell, the DLC cranked everything to maximum and left me unsure whether a tactical nuke like the storm ruler could be found anywhere in the desert or not. Gael is without a doubt one of my favorite fights if not favorite in the series.

3 years late to the party, but since I completed DS3 only recently (did not want to get spoilered), I have to say: The Ringed City is really a worth "last DLC". I did not like the area that much, at least at some points it feels too ganky, especially the area down the stairs where Shira is, way too many enemies. The Swamp was also not really pleasant, especially because I think that two Ringed Knights at once are a little bit too much, especially because one of them is using a Spear, which means that he is hiding behind it all the time. The Angels were quite annoying as well, I had to read how to fight them, because I was sure I can kill them. And once I figured out that they are controlled by those Hollows, I found the first of them after the Swamp, which killed the second Angel. In my opinion, they are not really easy to see and should be more obvious, at least the first one should be standing out and it should be clear that the Angel is killed so that players know what to look out for. Regarding the Bosses: I did not know that there was an easier and harder Demon Prince, I always fought the harder version, lol. Might be something to look out for, I enjoyed the fight tho. Midir was a little bit frustrating for me, but mostly because I am not good at fighting giant Bosses and he had a little bit too much health for me. He was not unfair by any means, but I personally had difficulties with him. Halflight was meh. The idea is absolutely great, but my experience was quite something: First time I entered the Bossroom, I got the NPC. Lost, second time I got a player, and he was not really good so I won in like 10 seconds, without him doing that much. And I got summoned once, and ganked the shit out of the player, which was easy as well. In my opinion, the invading player should have more health (at least the HPs of Halflight) and should not get supported by Painted Guardians. This would give the invading player a fairer chance and does prevent the fight becoming easy for one side (even tho, the Bossfight will not change, obviously). Gael was a masterpiece. I dont hink he is really difficult, I died a few times, but nothing too special. But the fight itself is just amazing and flawless, I would say it is the most perfect bossfight they created so far.

Gael is one of the most exciting boss fights in the series hands down. The only complaints I'm seeing about the DLC is that to many people it seemed to lack any sort of closure to the story, which I'm sure upsets a lot of lore buffs, but I'm not really bothered by it.

yeah I had a very similar reaction to fighting Gael, when I first got to the second phase and died, I was blown away by how cool the fight was that I wasn't even mad( much like how I felt on second phase of the abyss watchers), and this continued when I failed it my frustration was only with myself and how I was making mistakes not that the boss was unfair.

-how to finish beautifully a soulsborne series ? -Make a hard boss in the end of the DLC. -OK yes but how to make a hard boss, and sure to stay in memories ? -mmm... Well... Make a lady maria for the flames, Knight Artorias for erratic attacks, Orphan of kos for agressives attacks (and large live bar, and desolated arena), and the Nameless king for his look, his average and lightning attacks (and a cutscene to show us "I am the hardess boss") Anyway for me, for my personal choice of bosses (top 10), from 10 to 1 : Manus, Father of the abyss Gerhmann Knight Artorias Orstein and Smough Soul of Cinder Orphan of kos Lady Maria Slave Knight Gael (He can confront the King but it's hard to choose) the Nameless king (just for the challenge and the best cutscene I ever seen in SoulsBorne series)

Gael is by far the best fight in the Souls series. While not being as grand and perfect as Ludwig, he is a fitting end to the best franchise to grace us over the past six years. The battle ls intense and brutal, symbolic and heart breaking, and it was the final somber note we needed. No special endings, nothing. Just a somber note of a world yet to be painted.

I've got to say that going in blind was quite the experience. The spots with the angels were a lot of fun. Granted I almost threw a controller but once I figured it out it became one of the more enjoyable aspects of the early areas. As a pyromancer I was incredibly frustrated by the demon prince fight but the feeling of accomplishment from killing him was one of the best in the series. The beautiful areas of the ringed city completely blew everything else out of the water including the areas of The Old Hunters. Fighting the spear did take me out of the experience but it was still enjoyable. Reaching the final area and seeing that empty waste made me realize how far I had come. The fight with Gael was difficult but it was a welcome challenge. 4 hours later I had finally won. There was no feeling of relief. I never wished the fight to end because of what that signaled. The end of that fight was the end of dark souls. Delivering the pigment to the young girl in the painting did give me some hope for the series but I don't think we'll ever see the world she paints with it.

According to your boss rankings for the entire series: Demon Prince: Easily around the top 20 hardest bosses Spear of the Church: somewhere in the middle... it is one of those boss fights where you could get a scrub, or a pvp god. Since this is the last DS game, it seemed needed to have an Old Monk-esque boss. Darkeater Midir: Top 3 for me. No other boss in Dark Souls has proven to be that difficult to solo (Mercury can make him a little more managable, though) Slave-Knight Gael: Easily Top 10. He would be a little higher if he were not so predictable in the middle phase. But he hits really hard and is deceptively fast.

I never understand why people would EVER complain about the camera when you have manual camera controls. You are given the ability to lock, unlock and control the camera as you please. If you are too lazy to use it, it's not the game's fault. Also, how is rewarding patience supposed to be a con? Speed running is the easy way out so it is punished. Why should the player be rewarded for blinding rushing ahead and avoiding danger rather than facing them with wits? And ganks are in every single DLC. Well, you yourself have mentioned the weakness of your points as your own doing so I'll leave it at that.

Judicator Argo, Demon Prince, Gael, Midir. Judicator is much more subjective, because it depends on the skill of the player/ how nice the player being summoned is, as I beat him on my first try because he didn't do anything. It took me 3 hours to beat the Demon Prince, some of that has to do with the fact that I haven't played a Souls game since Ashes of Ariandel, and some of that has to do with the fact that when I was on his second phase, I would lose connection to the servers or my internet died. I swear that happened at least 6 times. Gael took a collective 5 hours, but that's also due to the fact that there were 3 of us who had to beat him separately, and we grouped up at the beginning to help each other. Believe it or not, but when playing with 2 other people, the Black Bow of Pharis and Dark Arrows help a lot with Gael's fight in all of his phases. Took us about 20 tries to beat him with the first person, 1 try to beat him with the second, and 3 to beat him for me. Midir, however, was so fucking difficult. Even though it only took me and that same group of people 3 hours to beat him (only on my game, by the way), he was by far the hardest of the bunch. So many 1HKO attacks made it a frustrating adventure, but made victory so much sweeter. I was scared when I did beat him, because it was our final attempt before everyone went to bed, two of my summons had died and left, then my final summon eventually died, but stayed to see if I had beaten this asshole of a dragon, and when he found out that I had died but killed Midir at the same time, we both literally burst into tears of joy. All of these fights are great (Maybe not Judicator, but being summoned into the fight, I still find it fun and exciting) and I'm glad that FromSoft ended their amazing franchise on such a high note.

Actually I think that the players who invade in halflight actually get a poise and defense buff so even charge attacks from great weapons don't one shot you. So I would say its actually pretty balanced and unique. Not as similar to the monk fight as people say. Also the more summons the player has the stronger the invader boss gets. I don't mean to rant I just think he made a judgment about this boss without actually having a full understanding its mechanics.

The Spears of the Church, though a 'meh' boss, balances itself pretty well. If you end up being an ass as ganking the player boss, the player gets more health, stamina, and magic. Not sure about this part, but I want to say your weapon and poise gets a slight buff as well, what with the more targets. I personally enjoy the fight being the boss, as gank-spanks are rewarding when able to be accomplished.

But I will have to defiantly admit that he is the best boss of Dark Souls 3 and for me the best boss in the series. I fought him for the first time on NG+ 13 and he was defiantly a challenge for me. I am a LVL 340 and my vigor was about a 65 or 68 and I had the level 3 ring of favor when fighting him and in his first phase on hit from his blade takes half of my health. It was a long fight but it was an awesome was to end the series. If this is going to be the last Dark Souls game ever, I think this is the best way to end it and I wouldn't have it any other way.

If you actually take your time and check out your surroundings, instead of running around aimlessly like the video seems to show, it's not too hard to figure it out. I solo'd all the bosses to get the best experience possible, and these are my opinions. Twin Demons: I thought this fight was mediocre, but I might have killed them too fast to appreciate them. Half light: Boring boss, I had a Havel cosplay summoned and I 2 shot him. Gael: absolute masterpiece. His stages were all fun and he just looked so cool, however I think his final stage was a little too fast. Mirdir: This boss sucks. His health pool is way too large and his attacks and the fact he runs away all the time is so annoying and repetitive. Easily the hardest boss in the series, not in a good way though.
@TheGwopboyzprodigy

The Demon Prince* There is only one Prince. With the spear of the church His health heavily depends on how many summons, If you are unfortunate enough to run in with 3 players vs an experienced pvp player and you will lose, He gets a massive health pool with even more poise to not be stagger locked. And Gael will body ANY boss that has come before aside from Yhorm without the storm bringer as his health and damage could have him kill he dragon in a blow for blow. Lastly difficulty is based on build, soul level and ng+. Ng+ 1-5 is easy for a general Souls player familiar with the series. And unfortunately it is very easy to over level in these games which balances its self out in the later ng+s (6-8) The apex of difficulty has always been ng+7 which is where Dark Souls capped but Dark Souls 3 seems to bypass this but only damage wise. At 7 there is a noticeable change in combo selection and a few new moves and less common moves that are used more freely. On top of all this is the build whereas you can still "cheese" bosses which is no way to play, the late bleed or current parry "strategies" that render bosses extremely easy when they are normally extremely difficult even without being on the legitimate ng+, Gwyn from Dark Souls 1, Champion Gundyr and even pontiff to name a few. Aside from that is the abuse of the most forgiving mechanic in all of DS which is the Dark Souls 3 rolling invincibility frames. From what I've come up with rolling would of been more along the lines of Dark Souls 1 in terms of effectiveness whereas you actually have to time it accordingly or be punished. With the ring to boost invincibility frames extending it to a weaker form of where it is now. With Dark Souls 3 you can without fail roll into a boss, Not take ANY damage (unless it's an aoe attack) and have the maximum amount of time to deal damage and escape unharmed along with cutting their combos short as you displace yourself or simply roll into their blind spot like circling pontiff but much easier and even safer. Side notes are simply towards the beauty of this fight, Walking amidst the desert ruin landscape you see in the distance the worn down remains of all you know, This is also in the original box art hinting that this was the final battle all along with the soul of cinder (representing those who have linked the flame) meaning us) prepare for one last fight. As a deeply invested player I literally reared up as the song starts to build up revealing The Fucking Launch Trailer Music finally being showcased which signified the first time Dark Souls 3 was revealed And the last song you hear giving a really good chill. The fight can drag out from the fog to where you first meet him unless the main strategy is to roll through attacks which removes the pressure he applies almost entirely but it really is crazy for the fight to move across this vast battle ground. I also can't help but get a feeling of desperation and something i can't explain as everything you've known is miles off as you face your final battle away in such a desolate place. Loved this DLC, Still haven't bested him or the dragon, Ng+9 sl 180. I solo my bosses and even Sherpa for others but seeing posts like (ng+2 sl 230 stuck on whatever boss) makes me sick

the funniest thing was when i first tried to kill gael... i died 20 times... when i was only dodging into his swords (to the left side) then i get through it ...with my first try... dodging to the right side.. most the time i dont even need to dodge..just walk....

Actually the church boss is amazing when you invade 3 phantoms and a host. You absolutely tank damage, and using the canvas talisman with soothing sunlight is pretty broken.

The biggest problem with the Halflight NPC fight to me was that he would spam the same move over and over and over and I'd just have to wait. Beating it would take 5-10 minutes, and to clear the Cov. you need to do it 30 times (or turn online mode on and face a bunch of no damage/unlimited stamina hacking Havel monsters)... got old really quick.

It would be also really interresting to know, if you too felt that this DLC was supposed to be two DLCs that where shortened and pushed together (everything before the Demon Prince and after) - or if its is just me.

Finally, someone truly understands my pain now. Those angels are BS and every time I'm spotted I go from 1104 Hp to 0 Hp faster than the roll animation. But I learned something, never start a dlc at NG+ 7 when your soul level is 129

i dont really see how gael's first phase is like the orphan of kos, he is fast and dangerous thats true but he fights with a very similar rythm to artorias rather than the orphan, the orphan doesnt really have a rythm he just almost never stops attacking making you rely on the rallying system to defeat him while gael is fast but you can reliably dodge all of his attacks just like with artorias, also he has a leap attack that is exactly the same as artorias not to mention he is a knight that was corrupted by the dark and got crazy because of it, and just like we defeated manus which was artorias's mission we can take the blood of the dark soul from gael and give it to the painter which will complete his mission which he couldnt complete on his own since he got corrupted. we should start calling him gaeltorias as far as im concerned lol

I truly believe that Friede is a better boss than Maria. I feel like Maria has very simple attacks, she just uses simple swings that are very easily punished. But Friede leaps and spins around with dual scythes.

Dragon bosses throughout the series. Kalameet: Fairly difficult yet a cool fight. Sihn: Discount kalameet. Midir: Internal screaming of pure agony seriously wtf even.

Demod I do hope you see this, I think that Midir might have been an attempt to give the player a real dragon god remake. A giant dragon with a similar looking head and high damage and health. It seems like it makes up for the ancient dragon and dragon god together.

I find your review interesting because I like to take levels slow and explore all the secrets and stuff to a level, I feel like that's one of the main joys of Dark Souls. Yet you apparently rush to find fights, I was always more into lore and scenery than the souls fighting

As soon as you said "Spear of the Church is disappointing" I wrote your list off. The Monk and Mirror Knight Fights are regarded as special boss battles within the community. I'm sorry you're bad at PVP but that doesn't make it bad. Can't wait for you to list this as your least favorite boss fight in Soulsborne!

TBH, I feel like an asshole as a Spear of the Church. When I went through it on my 3 characters, I destroyed everyone very fast. But on my Orinstein cosplay, I went 30-0. Papa O would be proud that no one made it to the princess past me.- Correction 31-0 now. Maybe it will get better once the player base dies off back to the core players that keep DS afloat. But right now it feels too easy to wipe the floor of these 4 man gank squads that are just players returning to experience the DLC then leave again.

Hated most of the areas bc poison swamps, gank fests and GODDAMN CURSE BOIS, but the bosses were among the best! Midir punishing old school staying under or circling around fighting style and rewarding players with the balls to take him head on, and Gael’s cinematic apeshit badassery will be fights I remember forever.

Kinda disagree with your comments on the level design and such tbh but each to their own. I thought the lake was kinda cool and gave a desolate feeling. Ganks can be easily outmaneuvered and handled. For the most part I feel that it's pretty unique for the most part but still, couldn't have a better series end.

Aside from spear not being that great, I’d dare say ringed city might be the best DLC in the series and while I’d say the princes are top 25, I could argue midir is top 5 of all bosses in the series and Gael might actually be my favorite boss in the series. I died to him so many times but I never felt angry about it. I was excited that I got to keep fighting him because he’s such an overall incredible boss

I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought this DLC felt a lot like Dark Souls 2. it just feels frustrating. Like most of the enemies are just meant to be as hard as possible while still technically being killable rather than being a fair challenge. The Ringed knights and Angel things are prime examples of un-fun bullshit design. I didn't even know the angels could be killed by finding a worm thing at first because it's never obvious where they are. That run from the second bonfire to the third in the Ringed City area was just way too long. I play a Sorcerer usually, and I actually ran out of FP and Blue estus for the first time in the game. I carry 5 with me, and my bonfire was maxed. Just too long without a bonfire, or even a shortcut. I'm still mad over those 140k souls I lost in the process. Also, I made these comparisons even before I got to the area where you get invaded without being embered, and the PvP boss. Just kind of feels like revenge of the B-team given the major references to 2 in the Earthen Peak area. I still liked it a lot more than anything in Dark Souls 2 mostly because of the bosses. Though I didn't even know that Midir was a boss my first time too. I thought I killed it by knocking it off the bridge.

Funny how contrary to you I felt like the first phase of the Gael fight was super easy (only needed 1-2 estus), but the second one was a hassle and I was down to zero estus and almost dead at the end of the fight. Kalameet is way better than Midir imo. Midir fight was boring and took forever due to the huge health bar.

I have to agree Midir is a very tanky boss and is hard to handle. But once you look a little into the lore you begin to understand just why. This is a dragon that has battled and fed on the abyss since the first age of fire! Just let that sink in.... Now look at where you fight him. In a pit filled with abyss and if you pay attention when the fight begins he just finished absorbing some of it. This guy just took a shot of what can only be described as a shot of pure adrenaline!!!

I just beat Ringed City yesterday and I was horribly disappointed. It's pacing was horrible and it felt so bland. It's an incredibly long stretch to the first boss, then the last 3 bosses are right next to each other. I didn't get any real semblance of lore. Ashes was way too short but I loved it. Sister Friede was awesome, the lore there was awesome, and the snow setting was awesome. And it was paced super well. That's just me, though. Also SKG has 3 phases technically.
