The bonfire mechanic is honestly just something for the games for balancing purposes. Lore wise, if an undead were to be killed upon their adventure, then they would eventually come back to life in that very spot. Not all undead respawn at a bonfire. Again, a missed opportunity to actually do something unique and or fun but instead it seems like a "Oh, we need to put the bonfire in the game bc dark souls has bonfires. So when they die, they will respawn there" I would have done some sort of revive thing where estus replenishes movement points and you have a set number of them, and you can use one of your own to revive your comrade in the middle of the fight maybe? So that way you are weighing your options of heling yourself so you can save the run or revive an ally to have a better chance of knocking the boss down faster. And if all the party dies then I would consider it a total wipe and then depending on the situation, you could do different things. If it is a regular boss then do the bonfire checkpoint, it is a random encounter then make the thing they encountered leave after killing the party and take their stuff. SO SO SO MANY POSSIBILITIES and yet we kinda get a watered-down bonfire checkpoint system.

That's a creative way of doing it! Good concept!

This Tabletop RPG feels less like "We are exploring the world of Dark Souls" and more of "I am playing the Dark Souls Video Game Via dice rolls". Feels way more like we are playing the tabletop RPG of the Video Game.

Can't argue there. It seems very close to 4e D&D, with many small abilities you would use. When I was playing 4e, it felt like playing a board game rather than an RPG. And that is the vibe I get here too.

I do wonder if editing this TTRPG would be easier to make a better Dark Souls experience than trying to alter base 5e. Gonna be honest here chief, this news about how the game will work isn't pulling me in as much as I would have hoped, and I think that the best thing we will get from this attempt is that we can take the best elements and ideas they put forward to them make a better TTRPG

Agreed - I believe there will be better games to use the good stuff they have made. I'm at least willing to give it a chance when it comes out, but I do think it will end up as inspiration rather than a played game.

I am just worried that the items are gonna be lacking due to really poor ability/mechanic translation from console to the tabletop. They had a chance to fix some of the items based upon their lore flavor text. If I remember correctly, the Onion Knight set is supposed to be really good at deflecting arrows but nothing in the game reflected this. So, the Cat set could have totally given you some advantage against arrows... and also should boost your Charisma, that just didn't make much sense.

Exactly what I'm afraid of. Having each item give you some kind of ability is exactly how Dark Souls RPG should work! But the things they have shown so far just do so very little, and not even terribly tied to the actual items.

Also also, I am not sure if it is your cup of tea but getting your opinion on the game they had played live would be something I am interested in. Consider me Subscriber 600.

I'll probably watch it through at some point, but I did pop in for a bit once during the live game. My reaction? It felt like I was watching a game of D&D 5e. And thank you 600!

I already want to adapt the positioning costs so you could spend the Positioning a second time to get the bonus a second time just so players have the tactical option possible.

A definite high risk, high reward change. I wonder if the benefits will be enough to justify the spends?

There is a setting for the Fragged Empire rpg called Fragged Aeternum that's Souls-inspired while adapting the Souls-tropes to its own fantasy setting. It's really good and very much not 5e based.

thanks for the breakdown! the more I think about it, and a video like this helps, I think the best way to get a SoulsBorne TTRPG experience is to just play Mörk Borg unmodified and just have the DS/BB art books on the table for players to look at it while we play a far more interesting, original game+system. This really does feel like board-game publisher cashing in on 5E with no real vision.

I absolutely think Mörk Borg would be a good fit - both thematically and mechanically. I'm trying hard not to be pessimistic but...I don't see myself playing it as written more than a handful of times before I scavenge it for parts.

@@TheRPGBlender which one? the DS RPG or M¨B? just participated in a follow up q&a. They "say" there's a lot in there for GMs and more than implied scenarios are forthcoming. I have some serious doubts, but... i bought it anyway, and if anything now I'll have a DS art book with some extra RPG junk

Dark Souls RPG. I'll at least be giving it a try, but I'm thinking yeah, will be more for the extra pieces that could be reused for other games. And I pre-ordered as well... Can't do a real analysis without actually getting it!

Thank you very much for the video. I really don't know what to make of the game at this point. There seem to be quite a few intriguing ideas, but the way they went about realizing them feels just so lackluster still. Right now I wouldn't expect the characters to get too many slots for gear. It feels like they took the DS:TBG baseline with classes stats (more or less) and abilities and went from there. After having successfully evolved the board game with its mechanics into the card-game they then went on to further evolve it into a table-top rpg. Also let's hope the items previewed are low-tier with their abilities and not what you should generally expect to find. They seem really boring. Though with as many as they made for the game, at least there will be a good chance that some of the effects will combo nicely. Just need to find the damn thing. Finally, its a real shame the left out a starter adventure. A few pages, short and sweet, can make all the difference in attracting new players, or entice people to run it after all. If they are all in DS3, why not have the players make their way to Iudex Gundyr and have him beat their faces in if most of what they do for marketing is harping on how hard it will be.

Agreed on all points. There are a number of ideas I like with what I am seeing, but the implementations demonstrated seem to be missing the mark. Hopefully as bigger channels get to reveal stuff from their preview copies we will see it was just poor examples.
