I have thousands of hours into 7D2D, mostly in Darkness Falls, and I still learn things from your videos. I tend to hoe the land near my base for farming because the resource cost is so low. I use the rows between the crops for either water sources or for planting mushrooms, as the mushrooms don't need the land to be hoed.

BTW I don't know if this is a bug bu unmanned rain catchers will still gather water even without buckets: basically as soon as you put in the buckets it'll spit it on the other side fully filled. This is extremely useful if you don't feel like emptying them daily. I got 20 buckets in a row from one catcher that I ignored for a while. Meaning that it is useful to put down catchers even if you don't have a forge yet to make buckets. Pretty sure only iron buckets work, clay ones don't. One way to use the catchers is for water. Just dig an extra water basin for yourself and dump the catcher water in that so you can use it to fill jars and bowls for crafting. Also working sinks now provide clean water instead of murky so that's a big change.
@SnowBee
Ай бұрын
Thanks :) That is interesting as I have certainly noticed while I was using them prior to putting a bucket in that they would full up. Without the bucket they just "reset" and just started to full again. I must check that out.

Couple of tips: - Waterlogged crops will still grow just fine as long as they're still exposed to sunlight so there's no need to dig a 1 block hole for your water source. Just dump a bucket of water in the middle of your field and plant within the waterlogged blocks. Your crops will still grow fine. - There's no need to use expensive farming plots between the crop rows. Just dig down (or build up) 1 block between rows and hoe and plant in that soil. It does make the field uneven but you can always fill in the holes with farm plots later in the game if you prefer. Using these 2 tips, you can have a field that uses 100% of the space on Day 1.

Thanks Davin, Yes, a few days ago someone did mention the digging down a level between the hoed soil. Your suggestion and his one will go into my combined farming long video that I do after all three guides are out. It is an excellent idea, I will certainly include your reference, so thanks for that. I dug up one block lower in the centre, then covered it with a farm plot, thus not having to lose the centre block. However, your suggestion with just pouring water in the centre on the crops is great as it works for hoed soil as well. I will say though that I don't like the squelching sound you get when you walk on water blocks... that is just me though :) Still, another good idea, and I will put it in the compendium guide and reference you to it.

first, I think it's worth noting that it matters which direction you're facing when you hoe, as it "un-tills" the spots to the left and right. second, if you dig a trench between the tilled rows, you can till and plant in it. It's a little awkward, but a lot cheaper than the farm plot blocks. third, did you call the scrap iron hoe "her"? :)
@SnowBee
Ай бұрын
Digging a trench between tilled soil is simply brilliant! I checked it now and I think that is an amazing hack. Thanks for that. I am unsure about the direction comment? Generally I find if I keep in a straight line, whether I am coming or going, it hoes and lifts the centre soil. I noticed it seems to matter if there is an incline. Just it didn't seem to make a difference on flat land? Haha, okay you noticed that "her" comment :) Yeah, I personified the iron hoe to male ("bad boy") and the scrap one to female. Actually, I did have more comments regarding the "hoe", which I removed before recording. Certain words these days have other connections. So, the word "hoe" is also used as an insult in "ho", which I am sure you are aware of. So while doing my script, I was finding it funny talking about this "scrap ho" and "iron ho". I initially had a few innuendoes regarding the hoe/ho, but removed them as I thought it came across as sexist. However, the male and female bit stayed in as I thought I was being a least equal on that. :)

So are the irrigation pipes not worth using anymore with the changes to the way rain catchers and single row for water trenches??
@SnowBee
Ай бұрын
Well, irrigation is still needed for underground farming. It is also used if you are growing in or on top of a building. Hydroponics can also use irrigation pipes. From a resource point of view, they never were worth it as you could always get away with hoed earth and rain catchers. If you don't like rain catchers and trenches, then irrigation is still your option. Personally, I tend to not go cheap with farming, I like farm plots and I certainly still like irrigation. It always worked and over the years of DF farming, always functioned well. I still have not tested it yet in v5.1, so I want to see for myself whether the distance from pipe to plant is still acceptable. I was reading that it is lower, so that would be a negative and certainly not worth it if you are planting on the ground outside a POI.
@alcyone1985
Ай бұрын
@@SnowBee from the few pipes I have crafted and put in my farm it does seem to be nerfed since the early part of 5.1. the range from what I have tested seems to be 2 blocks away from the pipe itself unlike what it use to be even back in alpha 20. maybe u will have better luck testing it out tho since I kinda am guessing at how they all work at this point. luv the vids tho. DF best mod
@SnowBee
Ай бұрын
@alcyone1985 Yeah, I also picked that up in my initial reading. The two blocks are strange, but I would think it is usually a problem from vanilla that is forcing the mod to act differently, so we will see.
@Sanzero619

I have some question. Did it work 5 block vertical too? Also if this version only need 1 block water source, can you seal it with farm plot on top? Or do still need direct sunlight to make water source work?
@SnowBee
Ай бұрын
Yes, great question. The person, "Punished Lion" from the DF discord commented a short while ago in the discord that you can cover the water source. So you can put the water source down one block further and put the farm plot on top of that or cover with topsoil. So you don't lose the centre crop. I have not tested in v5.1 vertically. But with irrigation and raincatchers in the past, it did work vertically as well. When it comes to vertical farming with building under objects, one of the problems you have is "sun" or light is required. However, I think having two 11x11 farms on top of one another should work in theory. I think I will test and maybe add it to the next farming guide.
@Sanzero619
Ай бұрын
If that work, basically we can build 3 level of 11x11 with only 1 water source in the center (Since wheat and corn 2 block tall). That's kinda broken, not that i complain tho. And yeah, when farms is under objects perhaps it clasify as "underground farms". Waiting for your test and next guide, godspeed Snowbee.
